"A Very Short Story"
By Ernest Hemingway
Bay & Kyla
period 2

Presented by
E. Hemingway
(July 21, 1899 - July 2, 1961)
Had a strong influence on 20th century fiction
Married four times (had many affairs) with three children
Won the nobel peace prize in literature in 1954
Early in 1918 Hemingway responded to a red cross recruitment and signed up to become and ambulance driver in Italy. By June he was on the Italian front.
On July 8th he was seriously injured. while recovering for six months in the hospital he fell in love with his nurse Agnes. By the time of his release from the hospital and return to the United States, they decided to get married within a few months in America.
In March Agnes wrote Hemingway that she had gotten married to an Italian Officer.
Biographer Jeffery Meyers claims that Hemingway was so devastated by her rejection that he started a pattern of leaving his wives before they left him.
"A Very Short Story" was based on Hemingway's heartbreak.
Plot Summary
"A very short story" is about a WW1 soldier and a nurse named "Luz" who falls in love while she takes care of him for three months in the hospital. They make plans to marry but when the soldier arrives in America he gets a letter from Luz stating that their love was a mere "boy and girl affair'' and that she is in love with another. Later she writes the soldier again saying that she has not married, but the soldier doesn't respond and later that evening catches gonorrhea from a sales girl in a taxi cab.
much Like the soldier's relationship, the setting of the story slowly shifts from hot to cold.
Plot Structure
The soldier and Luz
met and fell in love
The soldier is released from the hospital
and is heading back to the U.S; they make
plans to get married.
climax: Luz writes a letter to the soldier breaking it off
In the letter Luz says she wishes the best
for him and tells him that she is expected
to be married.
Luz is never married and tells the soldier, he ignores her and contracts gonorrhea in the back of a cab
Much like their relationship, the setting in the story changes from hot to cold.
"She was cool and fresh in the hot night"
"It was lonely and rainy there... living in the muddy, rainy town in the winter..."

Gonorrhea- Something he has to live with the rest of his life (heartbreak)
Weather- their relationship going good to bad
Sales Girl- his anger (because she cheated on him)
Major- Soldier Flat character
Minor- Luz Dynamic
The author doesn't portray Luz as a bad person but because he makes the soldier a victim, the reader views Luz as a cold hearted cheater
cosmic- gonorrhea
bulletproof love
"it was the best time of my life, but now i sleep alone"
"This isn't fair!
Don't you try to blame this on me.
My love for you was bulletproof but you're the one who shot me.
And god damn it, I can barely say your name,
so I'll try to write it and fill the pen with blood from the sink."
"She was sorry, and she knew he would probably not be able to understand, but might some day forgive her, and be grateful to her, and she expected, absolutely unexpectedly, to be married in the spring. She loved him as always, but she realized now it was only a boy and girl love. She hoped he would have a great career, and believed in him absolutely. She knew it was for the best."
This man's relationship with Luz also serves to reveal the youth of the American nation. America was just coming into power on a global scale. The first World War went a long way to proving its viability as a major player in world affairs. But, America remains much younger and more immature than the European nations. Therefore, when the Italian general proves to be more of a man than the American soldier, Hemingway is indicating that America remains a young and immature nation.
writing Style
Known for his short, terse (abrupt) writing style, Ernest Hemingway provides a brief and pessimistic description of a wartime relationship in "A Very Short Story."
