What?

Why?

How?

What is CI?
CI is India's first website focused exclusively on conservation action

Launched in Jan 2012

Over 550,000 unique users, 10,000+ regd. users, audience exclusively Indian
Why?
Interested and concerned citizens don't know they can get involved in conservation
CI Objectives:
Enable conservation action

Scale-up conservation

Enhance stakeholders in conservation
Why?
Conservation learnings & best practices are:
Not "codified"
Not in the public domain

They are in the scientific domain or inside people's brains!

Why?
Current conservation efforts are primarily inward focused

Costly "reinventing the wheel"

Leaves out stakeholder groups-
Public!
Govt. / Forest dept.
Media
Nature lovers, tourists, photographers, birdwatchers
Why?
Other barriers-

Technology
Workflow, manpower
Seamless networking between conservationists
Search & reapply instead of reinventing the wheel
Branding- a powerful identity to lead a cause!
How?
Info gap:

Conservation case studies & best practices, research & role of science, institutional & legal frameworks, wildlife law & policy, experts, current issues, active NGO directory
How?
Action gap
-
Identify & report violations, how to be a responsible wildlife tourist, be a watchdog, create a campaign, make a film, file a petition, go to court, download & file an RTI, form a conservation group

Info gap
-
don't know what I need to know

Action gap
- don't know what I need to do
How?
How?
CI is inclusive!
Reaches out and addresses all stakeholder groups

We believe everybody can do something with the right stimuli

Encourages usage and contributions from everyone
How?
How?
"Codifying best practices"
"In the public
domain"
"Reach relevant
people -- few or a
few '000"
"Specific action-
Conservation outcome"
How?
Wildlife law
Case studies-
successes / failures
Wildlife science
How?
Codifying best practices is a critical part of CI's strategy

Get it out of the practitioners:
"Rewrite in English"
Videos / interviews

Allows understanding of issues & reapplication REPEATABLE!
Long way to go-

Conservation status of endangered animals, state of India's PAs

More geographic spread of reporting violations

More "best practices" from more practitioners

Local languages?
The CI
Workflow
"Knowhow"
"Toolkit"
How?
Mass collaboration - shared problem solving
Thanks!
