characterization
Hazel Grace Lancaster
hazel is a sixteen year old girl with stage four Thyroid cancer. She only lives for the sake of her parents, so they don't have to be childless.

Hazel is very smart, always reading, and is losing hope fast. She tries not to get close to anyone, knowing that when she dies it will cause a greater impact.

She is kind, funny, caring, and always sticks to her promises.
Protagonist
Augustus Waters
Augustus, also known as gus, is a seventeen year old cancer survivor. he fears oblivion, always cracks jokes, and his right leg is a prosthetic due to Osteosarcoma, and has been cancer free for a few years. He loves metaphors and will take a bullet for hazel.
Isaac
isaac is a mutual friend between Augustus and hazel, and is the reason the two met.

He often isn't able to control his anger and ends up smashing things.
(Ex. Gus's trophy shelf)

he had to have his eyes surgically removed due to eye cancer. his girlfriend, monica, broke up with him claiming she wouldn't be able to handle having a blind boyfriend. Their former promise, "always", inspired Augustus's and hazel's promise, "okay".
Mrs. Lancaster
mRS. lANCASTER IS HAZEL'S MOTHER. SHE IS WHAT YOU WOULD CALL A HELICOPTER PARENT. eVEN THOUGH SHE IS ALWAYS HOVERING OVER HER CHILD, HAZEL DOESN'T BLAME HER, KNOWING THAT WHEN SHE DIES HER MOTHER WILL BE CHILDLESS.

sHE TENDS TO OVER CELEBRATE THINGS SUCH AS LABOR DAY.
(EX. IT'S ARBOR DAY! LET'S HUG TREES AND EAT CAKE! COLUMBUS BROUGHT SMALLPOX TO THE NATIVES; WE SHALL RECALL THE OCCASION WITH A PICNIC!)
Lidewij Vliegenthart
Peter Van Houten
a grumpy old man with an alcohol problem. He wrote the
"Imperial Affliction"
and hazel used to love him. She always wondered what had happened to the characters at the end of the book, so she went to peter van houten's house in Amsterdam. she sees his true colors when sking for the answers he had promised over email. an old alcoholic who hates people. he was so unkind and uncaring that he called her a sideline of life for having cancer.
Lidewij is a young and kind woman. besides her kindness, she is Peter's assistant. She has been trying to get him to be kinder to people as well as stop drinking.

the plot
1.)
Hazel is forced by her mother to go to a cancer support group, where her friend, Isaac, also goes. there, she learns that Isaac will be blind soon, due to a surgery that would save his life.

At the support group, she finds Augustus waters staring at her. a cancer survivor with only one leg.during the meeting, Augustus takes an interest in hazel when she talks about his fear, oblivion. she talks about how everything will cease to exist, and the best idea is to ignore it.
4.)
At Augustus's, or Gus, house, Hazel gets to meet his parents. After that, Hazel and Gus talk a bit before watching the movie.

They both switch their favorite books, "The Price of Dawn" and "An Imperial Affliction", telling each other to call when they were done with their respected books.
2.)
After the meeting ended, everybody left the building. Augustus and hazel ended up waiting together, seeing that hazel's mother had not arrived. While they waited, hazel notices Isaac and his girlfriend, Monica, having kissing passionately. While they kissed, she noticed they kept on saying "always" to each other. She asked Augustus about it. he told her it was like their promise to each other.
3.)
Augustus then asked Hazel to come to his house to see a movie that had her "doppelganger" in it. At first she was unsure wherther or not to go with hin, but when she saw him put a cigarette in his mouth she was disgusted, raging about lung cancer and how hard it was to breath with it. he immediately explained to her that he had never smoked a cigarette. it was his metaphor.
"You put the killing thing right between your teeth but you don't give it the power to do its killing."
she then walked up to her mother's car and told her she would be watching a movie at Augustus water's house.
(also by john green >W< )
5.)
about a week later, Hazel calls Gus to tell him she had finished his book, the price of dawn, and a few of its sequels. She then talks about the book, an Imperial Affliction, with Gus. Both were angered and confused by the sentence ending of the book, and were able to talk about it. Gus reveals that he was able to contact the "Untraceable" and "elusive" Peter van Houten through his assistant,
5.) pArt Two
later that afternoon, Hazel writes an email to van Houten, asking a series of questions about An Imperial Affliction. a while later van houton replies saying that he couldn't tell her on email or phone. He promised that he would talk to her if she ever happened to go to Amsterdam.

6.)
A few days after the letter, Gus takes Hazel on a picnic. he felt bad that she wouldn't be able to get her answers, so he told her that he would use his "wish" from the cancer charity to take her to Amsterdam, seeing that she had used her own to go to Disneyland. She was delighted, but when Gus touches her face, she hesitates, knowing that if they got too close, her incoming death would cause a greater impact.
7.)
While making plans for Amsterdam, Hazel's lungs begin to fill up with liquid, causing her health to deteriorate. her parents question whether or not to let her go, but when Dr. Maria (hazel's doctor) says they should let her go so she can live her life. They allow her to go as long as Mrs. lancaster goes with them.
8.)
when Hazel and Gus meet up with peter van houten, they find out he is an old, horrible, drunk who doesn't care about any of the promises he had made to hazel. Lidewij, his assistant, had been horrified by his actions, so she quit, apologizing to gus and hazel.
9.)
After they get back to the hotel, Gus reveals that he has tumors in his hip, head, and shoulder. The news shocks Hazel, for she had always thought that she would be the first to go. After they get back from the trip, Gus's health continues to drop quickly.
10.)
Gus's health continued to get worse by the day. he knew that he would die soon, so he asked hazel and Isaac to prepare eulogies for a pre-funeral. She steals a line from from "An imperial Affliction" about some infinities being larger than other infinities. She then goes on to say how she wouldn't trade her infinity with Augustus for anything.
11.)
Eight days later, gus dies. At the funeral, hazel is shocked to see that Peter van houten was there. She was told that gus had told him that he needed to make up for ruining her trip to amsterdam by coming to his funeral and talking to her about his book.

peter revealed that he had a daughter named anna and that by writing the book he was making up for her death.
12.)
when isaac hints that gus had been writing something for hazel, she searches everywhere for it. When she figures out what gus had been doing, she realizes he had actually written a letter to peter van houten. the letter asked peter to write hazel a eulogy when the time came for her. The book ends with hazel telling Augustus that she liked her choices.
( i do, Augustus. I do.)

Setting
theme
I think that the theme of the story is that you need to enjoy your mini infinities while you have them. even though other infinities are
larger
, it's the
little
ones that are
cherished
that are the most are the most
beautiful
.
Thanks for watching!
