real world today. There are
several kinds of bullying. Bullying in the Real World















In the novel Tangerine, Victor Guzman calls Joey "Charlie the Tuna" for following Paul around. Later on, Joey got upset and fought Tino. Joey and Paul's friendship suffered as a result. Another result of this is Tino and Paul became closer friends. The author may have added this to the novel Tangerine to make the reader aware of bullying and/or to serve to the plot line as a moment when Paul and Joey's friendship suffers. Refer to pages 141-142 in the new
edition of Tangerine for the following quotes. On pages 141-142, Tino and Victor say, "Yeah! Yeah, that's the dude. Sorry, Charlie! Charlie the Tuna. He's always trying to get caught. He's always hanging around to get on the hook, right?" He poked Joey again. "Is that you? Are you Charlie the Tuna?"...Victor kept after him. "Starkist don't want tunas with good taste Charlie. They want tunas that taste good." The boys were laughing like maniacs now and slapping hands. "Do you understand the difference, my man?"(Bloor 141-142) When Victor kept after Joey and everyone started to join in, Joey began to puff up and get worked up. When Paul was 4-5 years old, his brother and his brother's friend, Vincent Castor, spray-painted the wall in their neighborhood with white spray-paint. Erik and Vincent got in trouble for doing this and got angry at Paul; Paul was the likely suspect for telling on Vincent and Erik. When Paul was alone in their garage, Erik and Vincent approached him with spray paint in hand. Paul wasn't sure what was happened until his eyes were being pryed open and even through his screams, he felt the pain of the white spray paint in his eyes. Paul lost his memory of this event for a very long time (until he was in 7th grade). Also, Paul lost his eyesight, he became legally blind, and started to be made fun of in school by his friends and his brother. Paul's loss of his eyesight caused him to viewed as a liability by the Lake Windsor Middle School soccer coach. The author may have added this to show the affects of bullying, but Paul's blindness is one of the center conflicts in the novel so I think that's why the author added it. On pages 263-264 Erik said, "Your going to have to pay for what you did." I said, "What? I didn't do anything?" "You're going to have to pay for telling on Castor. You told who sprayed paint on the wall, and Castor got into trouble. Castor doesn't like getting into trouble." I turned around and saw Vincent Castor. He was holding a can of spray paint. Then I felt Erik grab me from behind, easily pinning both of my arms with just one of his. I could hear my voice crying, "I didn't tell! I didn't tell!" And I remembered Erik's fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor spraying white paint into them. They left me screaming and rolling around on the floor if the garage.(Bloor 263-264) Throughout the presentation you have learned the effect of bullying in both the novel Tangerine and the real world today. It has become prominite that bullying needs to be gotten rid of, so how? Here are two possible solutions for bullying (both at school and at home). In Tangerine, Joey is bullied at school/soccer practice by Tino Cruz and Victor Guzman. This may not be the only time that bullying in Tangerine takes place, but it is a breaking point in the novel, making it important. Students today like Pheobe Prince and Alexis Pilkington, are bullied by fellow classmates in school similiar to how Joey was. So bullying in school needs to be solved. Here's an idea: in every classroom start bullying prevention groups that are required by the school. Not every student needs to be in the group, just 5-10 students per class and they can watch over the class without their classmates knowing and report any known bullying. This way, since students won't know who is watching and some students won't bully at all because they're in the groups, so the students will learn not to bully. A Solution to Bullying in School Even though the other solution is great as far a bullying in school goes and will probably prevent bullying from taking place in school, what about at home? Victims in the real world, Alexis Pilkington and Ryan Halligan, who were bullied online at home and got so depressed they commited suicide. Also, Tino was bullied by Erik at Paul's house and Paul was bullied by Erik at Paul's old house. All of these situations are important bullying situations, and they didn't even take place at school. So how to stop bullying at home? Well the solution is similiar to the solution for bullying in school, it's simple really. All you do is at a local neighborhood location, a pool, clubhouse, etc. have every person in the neighborhood meet up monthly and take counseling lessons on bullying and discuss bullying in the neighborhood and how to stop/prevent it. Later on, Paul invites Tino, Theresa, and Henry D. over to his house to work on their science project. Towards the end of their meeting, Erik and Arthur got home and started to laugh about Tino and Theresa. Tino felt insulted and decided to get Erik back. Tino and Erik went at it until Erik slapped Tino across the face which made Paul and Tino's friendship suffer. But also, seeing someone stand up to Erik gave Paul the strength to stand up to Erik later on in the novel. Without this event, Paul wouldn't have had the strength to stand up to Erik about Luis so this was really important for the author to add. This bullying incident happened on pages 204-205. What happened was "Look at this. I think it's great that these farm-labor kids get to spend a day away from the fields." Arthur nodded, slack jawed. "Yeah. It's touching."... Immediately, faster than i thoughthe could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino's face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass.(Bloor 204-205) Paul Fisher lost his vision because his older brother Erik spray painted his eyes white when he was only 4-5. Erik, with the help of his friend Vincent Castor, struck fear into Paul and damaged him permenately. Not only did they do this, but their actions are considered bullying. Alexis Pilkington was a victim of cyber-bullying who had her life taken away from her. Alexis was constantly harassed by schoolmates and eventually couldn't take anymore so she took her own life, a quite large measure, but because she was bullying. Both cases had a victim of bullying who had something taken away from them forever, one their sight, one their life. Tino and some other friends of Paul were working innocently on their school project, when Erik and Arthur came home. Erik and Arthur bullied Tino in person and discriminated against him as a "boy from the fields" and made Tino so mad he left and gave Paul the cold-shoulder because of Paul's lack of support. In 2010, Pheobe Prince was innocently dating Sean Mulveyhill and then they broke up. But his ex-girlfriend didn't give Pheobe a break and bullied her. Pheobe got upset enough to hang herself. In the novel it shows a realistic situation where someone doesn't get help when they are bullied and feels upset. In the real world there are situations, like Pheobe's, where someone doesn't get help when bullied. In the real world though, people sometimes commit suicide whereas they don't in the novel. In Tangerine, Joey is called names at soccer practice by Victor Guzman and then the rest of the team joined in. Joey didn't think it was funny and no one really cared so he dropped out of Tangerine Middle School. Ryan Halligan was being cyber bullied by one person then many people joined in. He was so depressed by the bullying going on that he commited suicide. Both incidents had to deal with bullying and the victim not having a safety net to help them through so they got upset/depressed. In Tangerine the missing safety net was Paul, when he didn't defend Joey. In the real world, Ryan didn't really seem to have friends to help him at all. However, Ryan's depression led to suicide and Joey's led to dropping out and transferring schools. Just as bullying occurs in the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor, bullying exists in the real world today in four ways, emotional, verbal, cyber, and physical. A boy named Ryan Halligan took his life after rumors about him spread online in 2003. Rayn's father, John Halligan says, "like a feeding frenzy. Kids who normally didn't bully got in on the fun, both at school and online."(www.cbsnews.com) Teenage online bullying is brutal and has taken many victims to its cause. Some Massachusetts lawmakers are debating on creating stiff anti-bullying laws to eliminate this practice since it is such a steep issue. The laws would ensure that any bullying, specifically online/over the Internet and by cell phone, by an individual would result in consequences for that individual. But laws aren't the only thing that is trying to stop bullying, some famous people, such as former Miss Teen New Jersey, who have experienced bullying are trying stop it because they know what the effects are. This chapter provides useful background information and is helpful as a basic introduction to this complex topic because instead of showing the common topic of bullying physically, or through cyber bullying, or even the idea of how bullying can be suicidal. This website presents the new idea of how shyness and anxiety can be tied to bullying which gives us a new understanding of the topic bullying.

Even though the bias in the paper and the presence of the author is obvious, the article does use some statistics and is helpful because it gives on side to the situation. The ideas outlined in this article appear to be largely the author’s opinion that bullying is a bad practice and needs to be stopped.
This website is very useful as it will provide an opinionated perspective for students who want to understand the side of this topic, bullying, that are against it. Many sites do not carry information saying bullying is good so even though this topic limits the ability to see the other side of the argument, an opinionated piece helps understand why bullying is being attempted to be gotten rid of.

The author's purpose is to list the common types and reasons for bullying and it is against bullying but doesn't show the bias as strong as some other articles I have read. Though the site has links to others and is a very kid-friendly website (making it seem less important) it is also very helpful because information is so easy to access. The article provides a basic overview of bullying in our real world today. As already stated, this site is really kid-friendly (easily accessible) and so the material covered is very general and basic but it gives you a basis to start from when researching in depth the topic of bullying.
This chapter provides useful background information and is helpful as a basic introduction to this complex topic because it is so easy to use and so simple that using this website is a very good basic introduction since all that's given is the basics.

This chapter provides useful background information and is helpful as a basic introduction to this complex topic since it gives statistics to make you think about what the impact of bullying really is which can therefore give you a indirectly swayed opinion, most likely, against bullying.

This article provides specific, detailed information on the event which took place on March 29th, 2010, due to bullying extensively online and the bullying continued after her death.
This chapter provides useful background information and is helpful as a basic introduction to this complex topic since this piece is actual evidence that bullying happens and has an impact. The article also shows a possible overcome of bullying which is suicide.

The author supports this claim with statistics from the event that occurred on January 14th, 2010, in which teen Phoebe decide to take her life due to bullying. This article is very analytical of the situation on January 14th and provides detail and a video to help a viewer/reader understand this incident more.
This article supports the common notion of bullying having negative outcomes and allows the reader to understand the common aforementioned idea. The article does this by showing an occurrence in which the outcome of bullying was negative, or lethal.

The points that are brought up concerning bullying are the personal experiences of all the different stories. These show how each author of the story feels towards bullying because of their knowledge and experiences. Although written for an audience who will try to solve the problems brought up on the site, the writing style is informal and the language is easy to understand. The authors, I'm sure, were writing to address a point on their behalf, but the writing isn't that biased, it is more like a person telling a story rather than arguing a point. This chapter provides useful background information and is helpful as a basic introduction to this complex topic by giving the personal stories of the individuals that are anonymously listed. This helps us understand how the problem in Tangerine is present in the real world and how it is present, which is useful in our explanation of how bullying exists in the real world. In January 2o1o, another suicide was commited due to bullying. This was by Pheobe Prince who had moved to her new town in Massechuesetts from Ireland recently (before the suicide). Pheobe briefly dated Sean Mulveyhill and they did break up but Sean's ex-girlfreind Kayla Narey was still mad at her and bullied Pheobe in and out of school. Pheobe's parents, after she died, charged the school for not protecting students against discrimination. The case was turned into a lawsuit for $225,000 against the school, South Hadley High School. Soccer star Alexis Pilkington was constsantly harassed online by some of her classmates. She had also been bullied way before she had even joined any online sources and so her family doesn't think that was the only cause. Alexis did not think she had done anything wrong (and she might not have, I don't know why she was bullied in the first place) but she was bullied. The bullying was so extreme physhologically on Alexis' mind that she just couldn't take it any longer. Alexis took her life on March 21st 2010, but Alexis' bullies didn't stop there. Cyber-bullying grew even after Alexis' death and a lot of children bullied claim that they are bullied online (42%). Alexis, Ryan, and Pheobe are definitely not the only people who have experienced bullying or cyber-bullying and unfortunately, taken their lives. There are other cases where in the real world people take their lives as a result of bullying. Not all bully victims take their lives.
