Media Bias in Politics

The effect of media bias depends on how the audience processes the information that being broadcasted by the media.
What is Media Bias?
Media Bias in Politics

Media bias
is defined as communication portrayed by the news that is one sided. It implies an opinionated view that conflicts with the standards of journalism.
Result of Media Bias
WHY TARGET FORD?
Analysis
David , Minh, Noah
It's our job as the reader to understand and process information without being manipulated.
The effect of media bias in politics could affect people's views, votes, opinions and beliefs.

Elected in October 2010
Ford was elected mayor in the 2010 mayoral election on a platform of reducing the "gravy train" of government expenses and taxes.

be focusing on?

According to the Cortex Research, the exposure of the Rob Ford scandal in the newspapers went up to 30% by mid Nov from the past year.

In order to appeal to a target audience, media purposefully and strategically excludes information. This allows them to support an argument while ignoring information that might disprove their point.

The audience is manipulated to process information based on the information released by the media, ultimately impacting things such as votes, etc.

Ford's deed has created an impact towards the voters' decision on finding another mayor for the next election.
Audience Negotiates Meaning
PRO- FORD
"THE FORD NATION"
AGAINST FORD
"ANTI- FORD"
THE PERSON THAT LIVES OUTSIDE OF TORONTO
"ANTI- FORD"
Ruins Toronto's image.
Ford is not in right mindset. It's his fault for doing drugs!
He associates himself with the wrong people
Keeps making the news headlines. I don't like that he is getting attention.
I will never vote for him again.

SIGNIFICANT QUOTES
"THE FORD NATION"
THE PERSON THAT LIVES OUTSIDE OF TORONTO
He stopped "The Gravy Train"; reduced taxes and costs.
The media is focusing too much attention on Ford. Give the guy a break!
He accomplished what he said he was going to do.
I will vote for him again.

“I do not use crack nor am I an addict of crack cocaine. As for a video, I cannot comment on a video that I have never seen or does not exist.”
- Rob Ford, Toronto Mayor
It's really fun to see Ford making the news for ridiculous things.
I like that he's getting a lot of attention. I want more!
I don't care about Toronto politics.
Impact: Next Steps
Media has social, ideological, and political implications
Many voters of Toronto will be very cautious when voting for a new mayor.

When the next Mayor is elected for the City of Toronto, should we have background checks of the person's past life to determine if the new Mayor will have a good positive influence on the city.

CONCEPT #2:
"Audiences negotiate meaning."
When the media puts out a story, it is up to the public, or audience, to decide what they think of it, and what the story means to to them.
In Mayor Rob Ford’s case, the media has done its job, whether it is positive or negative. The media has shown many good and bad sides of Ford, but it is up to us, the audience to decide whats good and bad, and what makes his image.
The next elected Mayor should be careful of what they say and how they act when they are being watched by the media, because the media can take and twist anything to make you look bad.
THE BIGGER QUESTION:
"How is Toronto going to elect another Mayor? What steps should Toronto take to ensure that they elect a better mayor?
To the mass media, Ford was seen as a good character even though he had physical flaws (such as being overweight)

The media saw that Ford was an easy target, so they picked him apart, which led to him losing all his powers.

Ford started feeding the media with his allegations, and became the focus. From walking into a camera, abusing powers, to doing drugs. Ford was "the wood that fed the fire."
This is a perfect concept for our topic due to the fact of Rob Ford being the Mayor of Toronto, and this all happening while he is in power.

After the exposure of Ford's scandal, the media did not continue writing about what Ford has done for Toronto.

According to the Toronto Sun:

He made the TTC an essential service
He eliminated the car tax registration
He privatized trash collection in the west end
He saved over $100 million dollars in labour contracts.

WHAT DID FORD ACTUALLY DO FOR TORONTO?
"I think a lot of the media outlets, well two in particular, are out to get me off my game," "It's not working. I'm doing what I was elected to do: save taxpayers' money and cut the waste at City Hall."
-Rob Ford, Toronto Mayor
"In
the calmest terms possible, it is unpleasant when the mayor of the biggest city in Canada essentially accuses you, or suggests, you are a pedophile."
- Daniel Dale, Toronto Sun Reporter
“…The mayor should throw himself to the mercy of the city, confess his sins, and check himself into rehab.”
-Michele Mandel, Toronto Sun

What would Rob Ford have to do, to make you accept a sincere apology from him?
CONCLUSION & WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED
ROB FORD'S MEDIA BLITZ
KEY LITERACY
CONCEPTS
The media has an huge impact on our views and culture.

Rob Ford went from being the new best mayor that Toronto has seen in a long time, to one of the worst mayor's that we have seen in only 4 years.

It is our duty, to understand and analyze media because it can be manipulated.

Discussion Question #2
Discussion Question #1
For the Ford supporters, I think there are no positive points to this story but there are many negatives. This controversy might force Rob Ford to be demoted or to step down. But on the other side; for the people that are against Rob Ford, this is an opportunity for him to step down and for a new mayor to arise.

This concept explains how media can change the view of how someone looks, in the image of the public, and can change his/her popularity.

At the beginning, he was very powerful and and lots of people loved him. Now his image has been destroyed, he lost all of his power, and now he is a laughing stalk of North America.
What would have happened if the media left Rob Ford alone, and only focused on his good side, would he still be one of the best mayor's that the city has seen?
How would you feel if Rob Ford was elected as mayor of Brampton back in 2010, and all the same allegations showed up?
