Parents names were David and Elizabeth
Had two siblings: Henry and Rosalie
Mom died when Edgar was two
She had left his father and taken her three children with her
When she died, Henry went to live with the grandparents
Edgar was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. John Allen
Rosalie was taken in by another family
John Allan was a successful merchant
As a result, Edgar grew up in good surroundings
He was also sent to good schools
At age 6, he attended a school in England for 5 years
He learned Latin and French as well as math and history
Edgar then returned to a school in America
He attended the University of Virginia in 1812, at the age of 17
Although his father had the money, he only gave Edgar a third of what he needed
Though Edgar did well in Latin and French, he began to drink heavily, and fell into debt-resulting in him having to quit school in less than a year
In The Army...
Since Edgar had no money or job skills and had been shunned by John Allen, he went to Boston and joined the U.S.Army
He did well in the army, earning the rank of sergeant major
Mrs. Allen died in 1829, at which point John tried being friendly towards Edgar
John signed an application for West Point for Poe
Edgar lived with his grandmother and aunt while waiting to enter West Point
He was also living with his brother Henry and his cousin
However he didn't stay long because John refused to send money
In 1831, Edgar went to New York City and was able to publish some of his poetry
He eventually was able to get newspapers and magazines to publish his works
inventor of the detective-fiction genre
famous for his poetry, such as "The Raven" and "Annabel Lee"
his poetry also had a great impact on modern culture and served as a great influence to modern literature
Poe had left Philadelphia with the intention of going to New York City, however supposedly he took the wrong train to Baltimore
On October 3rd, Poe was found at Gunner's Hall (a public house) and was taken to the hospital
He lapsed in and out of conciousness, but was unable to explain the cause of his state
Edgar Allen Poe then died on October 7, 1849 in the hospital
His last words were,"Reynolds", and the mystery still remains as to who or what he was talking about
Edgar Allen Poe's style of writing ended up affecting not only American culture, but the world's. His unique style of writing greatly influenced not only literature, but also songs and films.
