Transcript of Atomic Structure
What is an ATOM?
The Proton and Neutron
Atomic Math Practice
Definition: an element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Notation: name of the element + the atomic mass of the isotope
(ex.) Carbon-11, Carbon-12, Carbon-13
Average Atomic Mass: the weighted average mass of all of the element's isotopes
(ex: the average of Carbon-11 + Carbon-12 + Carbon 13.....
A new element has been discovered!! Your help is needed to determine its isotopes, isotope abundance, and average atomic mass.
Subatomic Particles and Isotopes
Proton: Positively charged particle located inside the nucleus
Neutron: Neutrally charged particle located inside the nucleus
Electron: Negatively charged particle that orbits the nucleus
Relative Size of the Particles
Atomic Number: the number of protons in the nucleus
Atomic Mass: the number of protons + neutrons present in the nucleus
Atomic Number (Z) = 6
Practice finding the missing piece of the atom based on given information.
Practice writing elements in isotope notation.
Avg Atomic Mass = (7.015*.9258)+(6.015*.0742)
Atomic Math Practice
Calculate the Average Atomic Mass for the following:
Average Atomic Mass
(14.003074)(0.9963) + (15.000108)(0.0037) = 14.007amu
(27.976927)(.9223) + (28.976495)(.0467) + (29.973770)(.0310) = 28.086
Write the isotope in the correct format for the following:
Atomic Number 17; Mass Number 37
Atomic Number 5; Number of Neutron 6
The isotope of Magnesium with a mass number of 25
Write the Isotope
