What is an ATOM?

Definition: an element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons

Notation: name of the element + the atomic mass of the isotope
(ex.) Carbon-11, Carbon-12, Carbon-13

Average Atomic Mass: the weighted average mass of all of the element's isotopes
(ex: the average of Carbon-11 + Carbon-12 + Carbon 13.....
A new element has been discovered!! Your help is needed to determine its isotopes, isotope abundance, and average atomic mass.
Subatomic Particles and Isotopes
Proton: Positively charged particle located inside the nucleus

Neutron: Neutrally charged particle located inside the nucleus

Electron: Negatively charged particle that orbits the nucleus
Relative Size of the Particles
Atomic Number: the number of protons in the nucleus

Atomic Mass: the number of protons + neutrons present in the nucleus
Atomic Number (Z) = 6
Practice finding the missing piece of the atom based on given information.

Practice writing elements in isotope notation.
