Transcript of Seek First to Understand . . .

Seek First to Understand . . .
Pretend Listening
We don't care to listen, but we make comments so that they think we're paying attention:
"Uh huh"

Spacing Out
Someone is talking to us, but we ignore them.

We are too lost in our own thoughts to listen to others.
Word Listening
You pay attention to what someone is saying, but not how they're saying it.

You don't catch the body language or feeling implied.
Selective Listening
Paying attention only to the part of the conversation that interests you.
Self-Centered Listening
Only see things from our own point-of-view.

Don't try to "walk in their shoes."
