Earthquake in MEDC Kobe, Japan earthquake 1995 January 16 UTC (local time January 17)
Magnitude 6.9 Depth 22.0 kilometers Five thousand five hundred two people confirmed killed, 36,896 injured and extensive damage in the Kobe area and on Awaji-shima. It was the first time that earthquake in Japan was officially measured at seismic intensity of the highest Level 6 The effects can be divided into primary and secondary effects. Primary effects included the collapse of 200,000 buildings, the collapse of 1 km of the Hanshin Expressway, and destruction of 120 of the 150 quays in the port of Kobe. Help from all over Japan was rushed over
to the destroyed cities. Rescue workers with their dogs had arrived 6 hours after the earthquake and fire fighters were there in less then one hour. Fires broke out when gas pipes and electricity lines colided Three tectonic plates colide
