Early Life
Alvin Ailey grew up during the Great Depression. He also grew up during racial segregation so Alvin did not have many active things to do. This was one of the reason of why he became a very famous choreographer and dancer.
Ailey's life was also very hard and his mother and himself struggled to survive since they had very little money and had to live on the streets at times.
Also, because of segretation and all the violence he witnessed, he grew up very scared of white people during that time.
Alvin Ailey's Adult Life

One of Alvin Ailey's famous dance pieces amongst many, is the dance called "Revelations" which is about being African-American and growing up during the great depression. It is a modern but spiritual dance with a lot of meaning.
Alvin was well trained in ballet, modern dance, jazz and African Dance Technique.
If you are wondering why Alvin is not really in the videos or dance pictures is because he focused on choreographing the dances and he did not have the time to teach himself the part.
Alvin would have a dancer by the name of Robert Battle play his part in dances.
Alvin Ailey was a professional choreographer. He was very well known for his spiritual and meaningful theater dances.
In 1977, Alvin was awarded the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP. He also received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1988, just one year before he died.
In 2014, President Barack Obama selected Ailey to be a "posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom"

What amazing things did he do?
What amazing things did Alvin Ailey do? Well, he choregraphed many dances that had a lot of significance. For example, he choreographed the masterpiecce "Revelations" which is believed to be the best known and most often seen performance.
In 1958, he opened up his own dance studio in New York, "The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater".
He was also an amazing leader and he wanted people to remember him that way.

Alvin Ailey was born on January 5, 1931 in Rogers, Texas U.S.
Six months after he was born, Alvin Ailey's father left him so Ailey only grew up with his mother.
Alvin Ailey never married or have any children . He dedicated his adult life to dance, choreographing great pieces and touring.
He traveled to many different States and Cities inlcluding San Francisco, CA so that he can look at different types of dances.
Alvin Ailey's life ended at the age of 58. He died on December 1, 1989 in Manhattan, New York City by getting AIDS which is a very deadly disease.
