Film's violent influences
Excessive violence is now another problem we face with the film industry. Americans are exposed to heavy doses of violence, which dominates the big screen. With the steady decline in PG-rated movies, which often times nowadays contain more violence than ever before, people of all ages are being exposed to violence more and more.

Aggressive attitudes can be easily adopted by younger people, especially children, who we already know are quite impressionable. Youth need reference points and will borrow from and emulate what they see in the media, and with the growing number of violent influences, we may see an increase in violent youth throughout our country.

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles made what became an infamous broadcast of a radio adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel
The War of the Worlds
. The radio play was essentially the same as the book. Only the time and place had been changed to accommodate the listening audience. The broadcast would go on to be described by Scott O'Callaghan as a Halloween prank and one of the greatest hoaxes in the history of media.
Talk radio was once regarded as a forum the lay person can get information from about certain subjects. (A new film, novel, etc.) When we hear the phrase "talk radio" now, we think of masters of bloviation like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, Alex Jones, etc. Each of these men has millions of listeners tuning in every weekday just to hear what he has to say. The most popular is Limbaugh. Because of this, each wields a great deal of influence on his audience to either buy or boycott a certain product the host may or may not like. The medium can even be used to influence people to create groups designed to usurp the government, so to speak. Rarely do we see a talk radio program that adheres to the more traditional show format. These tend to be interview-oriented shows.

In conclusion...
Audio manipulation through radio and other means has resulted in changes in how the radio presents its news. It has also allowed musicians to sometimes deliberately -- and not so deliberately -- put hidden messages in their music. This is a social problem because without the right guidance during childhood and adolescence, a person can be susceptible to being manipulated by broadcast radio, talk radio or even a song. This can be quite dangerous, and the only way to curb it may to be to enact the Fairness Act once again.

Body Image has changed many times over the centuries. In the past , a full figured body was beautiful, and now society has put that ideal on the back burner, in favor of a thin body frame. This has affected both men and women, pressuring them to meet this standard.

Intro
Media Manipulation has been around since before anyone could remember, street merchants used it, small shop owners; everyone really. As the years have passed, this technique has become well utilized. In the 50s, since the whole "perfect mom" trend was so popular, as was shown on television shows, and commercials. Manipulation was used a lot, women (at the time) wanted to be a good mother, and a dutiful wife. And so, they began marketing products for these women.
They even marketed products to the men for their wives, because men wanted the ideal family. Decades later, the Internet boomed, creating new way for people to access info, pictures, basically anything. Then photo editing programs became popular, and began being used on pictures of models. Starting a problem, no one expected to go so far.
Media Manipulation through Advertisement is a problem that directly affects everyone's lives whether we realize it or not. How else would people get people to buy their products or get people to see situations from their point of view? Manipulation can also change our ideals, and how we see or feel about other people.

I think that we as a society, have already deeply entwined our day to day lives with this problem that we have. It would be overly difficult to try and stop media manipulation, because without it a lot people would be out of a job and money.

Subliminal messaging to manipulate behavior seems to have originated in 1957 with James Vicary, an advertising promoter who claimed to increase popcorn sales by some 58% and Coke sales by some 18% in a New Jersey movie theater simply by flashing very briefly the messages "Drink Coca-Cola" and "Hungry - Eat Popcorn."

This is the method where reporters use a single example as "evidence". In statistical terms, this amounts to a sample size of one.
How is Media Manipulation Occurring?
Providing only one side of stories

Most journalists seem to forget there are two sides to EVERY controversial issue, otherwise it wouldn't be controversial! Unfortunately, these same journalists usually believe in one side over the other and will work to make sure only their side is fairly presented
Choosing only certain stories to run or emphasize
A media source shows it's bias not only by how it presents it's stories, but also in what stories it chooses to run.
Cherry-picking research & statistics

There are hundreds of thousands of newspapers, magazines, TV stations, and radio stations all collecting & reporting information. There are thousands of universities and millions of students doing research. All this doesn't even scratch the surface compared to the information transmitted on the Internet.
"Anonymous" or unnamed "expert" sources
A frequently-used method is to say something like "An anonymous source inside the White House has confirmed that Bush changed his policy position after blah blah blah "it all sounds so official."
Film has also played a part in the war on drugs, particularly marijuana. The 1930's had a fair amount of propaganda exploitation films to warn people of the 'dangers' of smoking weed. The films falsely claim that the product is highly addictive and is responsible for passage to violent actions such as murder or rape.

The media campaign to demonize the drug shocked the public, and caused enough influence throughout American that eventually led the vote of Marihuana Tax Act in 1937.
How does it affect us?

How do media influence public opinion?


Media shape public opinion in different ways depending on the content.

Here's an example:


Following the 9/11 terrorism, media coverage followed accusations by government authorities that pointed toward al Qaeda as the group that carried out the attack on the United States and Osama bin Laden as leader of that group. Those news reports on the attack and the aftermath shaped public opinion to support the war on terrorism.

Other ways to influence public opinion include
political advertising.
Mass Media Perception
By taking a look at old propaganda films from the WWII era, we can see one of the ways in which the big screen began its strong influence over Americans.

In these films, the goal seems to be uniform throughout: erroneously dehumanize our enemies and light a fire in the public, making them believe in the just causes for our going to war and what good we are doing for the world.
These classic war films showcased American's heroic efforts against our enemies, boosting the patriotic feeling in our country through the manipulated 'true' stories and glorified war scenes.
While we see many war films aimed at older audiences, that does not mean that children were excused from the clutches of manipulation. Plenty of cartoons related to the war-time efforts were released into theaters for children to watch.

Another issue involving the film industry is the racy, subliminal additions to children's animated films. Disney's many suspicious 'slip ups'. The powerful animation company has refuted the claims time and time again, but the large mass of seemingly perverse imagery and suggestive dialogue in the classic movies is almost too suspicious to simply be coincidental.
How do we fight manipulation by media?
This section takes a look at the influence radio and sound have on the American public at large.
Welles did this by capitalizing on how radio news was presented at the time of the broadcast. In other words, he molded the now legendary radio adaptation around the format of the day. He was also able to do this because he loved the media, and the media loved the story. He feigned outward concern when reports came out that some people had gotten hurt or were even killed. Secretly, though, he was thrilled with the coverage he got.
