What if... The Declaration of Independence was never written? The United States Declaration of Independence was a statement that the Continental Congress adopted on July 4, 1776. The statement announced that the 13 American colonies that were at war with Great Britain till then, would no longer be a part of the British Empire. The Declaration of Independence is indeed the nation's most celebrated symbol of liberty. What is the Declaration of Independence? Would tensions between the colonist, early americans, and Britain be as great? ??? Would the people known as, "Americans" have had the right to break away from Great Britain and become their own people? ??? ??? ??? How would some of the important documents in America be changed? ??? Or... Would they even exist? Lets just take the U.S. Constitution for example: There would be no United States. The problems facing the new nation under the Articles of Confederation were both numerous and serious. The lack of a unified national government, the absence of a single authority over interstate or foreign commerce, and the failure to include any provisions for generating revenue would have doomed the new nation. How would life in the United states be different? Without it our government would have divided as early as Shay's Rebellion. Have you ever wondered about what if events that have changed history today, never happened? ...But have you thought this deep into it? My answer to this question would be yes. Why? Because the Declaration justified the independence of the United States by listing colonial grievances against King George 111, and by asserting certain natural and legal rights including a right of revolution. Without the Declaration of Independence, unfortunately, most likely not. Of course colonist would've fought for their natural rights, but the Declaration was a justification that the United states could be independent on their own. Relations between the colonies and the mother country had been deteriorating since the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, leading to the British government being deep into debt. So, Parliament enacted a series of measures to increase tax revenue from the colonies. Do you think that we would still yet to this day have to pay taxes unrightfully? "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." ??? Fireworks? Games? .. And fun with the family on "The 4th of July" This day would not be a holiday, without the Declaration of independence. Its hard to believe that even the bill of rights would've been changed! (or possibly not exist) Our nation might not be perfect but our story of how we have "came to be" is enough to make people wonder, "Hm, maybe everything does happen for a reason?"Full transcript
