1492 - Christopher Columbus searches for new route to Asia, lands in Caribbean instead
Conquistador: a Spanish soldier who led military expeditions in the Americas and captured land for Spain
Hernán Cortés v. Aztecs
Francisco Pizarro v. Incas

Reasons for exploration:
"discover" new lands
gain wealth, fame, and glory
spread the word of God
expand their sponsoring country's empire (bring Native Americans under European rule)
Colombian Exchange: contact between Europeans of the "Old World" and indigenous populations of the "New World" leading to the widespread exchange of plants, animals, and disease
originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native
Native Americans had no natural resistance to European diseases; led to an overall loss of 85% of indigenous population of the Americas
