Transcript of Arpilleras of Chile and Peru

Arpilleras are Skillfully Stitched Works of Art
These colorful stitched pieces of art are called applique because they are pieces of fabric applied and stitched by hand. These pieces were created by women artists and have an interesting history.
Where is Chile?
The Women of Chile Create Arpilleras
They began creating these stitched works of art many years ago when there was a war in Chile. Many of the men had to leave their families. This mean that the women had to find a way to make money to support their family. They began to use their art and recycled materials to do just that.
Arpilleras Tell Stories
Art that tells a story is called a narrative. The women of Chile told their stories of hardship through their artwork.
Landscapes
Landscape works of art often show a fore-, middle- and background. This is how an artist can show space (an element of art!) in their work. How did this artist create space in her work?
The Chilean Landscape
Chile is a long narrow country. It has the Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.

But many that are sold today are landscape pieces. Women of Chile use old pieces of clothing and fabric to create their arpilleras. They now usually depict a happy scene.
Arpilleras of Chile and Peru
