"Old Town" "HAND DRAWING
INDIO'S DOWNTOWN" PRESENTED BY IN COLLABORATION WITH CREATE AN
OVERSIZE MAP OF
INDIO'S
DOWNTOWN PLAN
DRAWN WITH CHALK
ON THIS CEMENT FLOOR EVERY YEAR THE CITY OF INDIO INVITES
COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE
IN THE CHALK ART FESTIVAL... THIS YEAR, THE CITY OF
INDIO INVITED ART VULUPS
TO COLLABORATE ON A CREATIVE COMMUNITY
ACTIVITY... WE BROUGHT OUR MINDS
TOGETHER AND WE DECIDED TO... FIRST, WE DELINEATED THE PROJECT AREA
(THE CANVAS) THEN, LEILA (CITY PLANNER) DIVIDED THE SPACE
INTO +/- 1'X1' SQUARES... ...AND SHE ASSIGNED NUMBERS TO EACH QUADRANT THIS IS WHAT THE MAP LOOKS LIKE WE DIVIDED THE PAPER MAP (WHICH MEASURED ABOUT 32"x32") INTO THE SAME NUMBER OF QUADRANTS AS TO WHAT WE HAD DRAWN ON THE CEMENT FLOOR MIGUEL, FROM ART VULUPS, TRIMMED
THE MAP INTO 49 INDIVIDUAL
TILES AT THIS POINT WE WERE READY TO ROLL! EACH PARTICIPANT
RECEIVED ONE OF
THESE TILES
TO DRAW TO SCALE ON
THE CEMENT FLOOR... ...AND THIS
IS WHAT
THEY DID
COLLECTIVELY WAS IT WORTH IT GETTING OUR
HANDS A LITTLE DIRTY? SOME FOLKS GOT
TO THINK ABOUT AND
EXPERIENCE COLORS, LINES
TEXTURES AND MAPS. SOME COUPLES WERE ABLE TO
DISCOVER DOWNTOWN
IN A WHOLE NEW WAY! MOTHER AND SON GOT
A CHANCE TO BOND THROUGH
THE POWER OF CHALK ART! STRANGERS HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO
DISCUSS PLANNING AND
COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION. THE CITY PLANNER HAD A CHANCE
TO DISCUSS HIS WORK AT CITY
HALL WITH THE YOUTH. Hon. Elaine Holmes, City of
Indio's Mayor had an
opportunity to talk to students
about the importance of
being civically engaged. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: WE BUILT COMMUNITY! THE ANSWER IS YES! ...BEFORE ANSWERING THE
QUESTION, CONSIDER THIS: A COMMUNITY EXPLORATION
OF PLANNING, CARTOGRAPHY AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT. INDIO, CALIFORNIA
