The Scarlet Letter A Comparison: Hester Prynne & Earvin "Magic"Johnson The Scarlet Letters: HIV In the same way that Hester was branded with the letter A, for Adulterer, Magic Johnson was associated with HIV. After he went public about having HIV, society's views of Johnson changed just as they did for Hester. The Essential Question: What is the relationship between the individual and the community? The direct relationship between the individual and society is the reason why Hester Prynne and Magic Johnson were so effected by society's reactions to their "wrong doings". As a skilled embroiderer, Hester proved herself to be a valuable asset to the community and they began to look past her wrongdoing and accept her back into the community. Similar to Hester, Magic Johnson also possesed a talent that augmented his comeback; his talent being an excellent basketball player.
