SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING
Solar Panels
are devices that turn
light
into
electricity
. To produce electricity, light
must
hit a cell. This means that the quantity of electricity is dependent upon the amount of light. Solar panels are a sustainable form of electricity as they:
Reduce air pollution
: Traditional energy sources emit fossil fuels and toxic carbon dioxide and methane emissions. This cause the air we breathe to become impure and polluted. Therefore using solar panels produces no greenhouse gasses.
Reduce water pollution
: Typically electricity requires a minimal amount of water to generate, whereas solar energy requires none. This means local water resources cannot become contaminated and used.
Renewable resource
: Solar panel energy is renewable as the sun is a readily and consistently available free resource.
NEW FLAVOUR
The cheesecake flavour was modified to not only
expand

Sara Lee's
range, but to also enhance the products health benefits.
LOW IN SUGAR
SUSTAINABLE MANUFACTURING
To make the product gluten free, modifications were made to the cheesecakes base.
The main change needed to the base was the ingredients used. The replacement used for plain wheat flour, is coconut flour.
This was used, as when tested in a biscuit mixture it worked as the sensory characteristics and stability were the same as regular wheat flour biscuits.
FLAVOUR
Blueberries are commonly seen to help lower blood pressure, protect against disease and promote healthy digestion, (Ware, 2017).
Coconut is another flavour within the cheesecake and comes from the flour used in the base. This particular product was used for the flavour and also because it is
high
in fiber and protein and is
low
in sugar and Glycemic Index (GI).
Blueberries were also used as they are a
trending super food.
This is because they are high in phytochemicals (specifically anthocyanidins and flavonoids), antioxidants and vitamin A.

French Cream
Gluten Free
Blueberry, Lemon and Coconut
As identified above, in the two nutritional panels, gluten free cheesecake contains
72.4% less sugar per serve,
than the original
french cream cheesecake
.
This reduction in sugar provides a diabetic friendly dessert as well as reducing obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
Efficient transportation is another manufacturing procedure that should be implemented to promote sustainable manufacture.
Strategies that can be implemented are:
Strategically Placed Manufacturing Facilities.
This reduces pollution as trucks have close routes they have to follow.
Supporting Local Businesses
By purchasing ingredients from local business, carbon footprint as reduced as ingredient sourcing comes from within a close radius.
Earth Friendly Transportation
Using trains to transport products for extended periods of time is another sustainable practice to be used. To keep products at the necessary temperatures, regulated boxes must be used.
Another
sustainable

practice
used within
product

manufacturing
is
reduce
,
reuse
and
recycle
.
Reduce
Finding a purpose for an
entire
product will minimise waste as everything is being used.
Use products that have minimal packaging and can be used completely used and then disposed of appropriately.
Reuse
resources, such as packing and food, where possible.
For example creating compost out of appropriate food scraps.
Recycle
Make sure all waste is disposed of correctly, and recyclable products are used when possible.
Cradle to Grave
When using and collecting products, consider their full lifespan and impact on the environment and when disposal is required, it is done correctly.
