The Purchasing of Manhattan ( New Netherlands)
Governor Peter Miniuit bought Manhattan Island in present day New York ( New Amsterdam) for $24 ($625 in today's money)
English Attack
New Amsterdam's Governor, Peter Stuyvesant, was a pain to all the Dutch. In fact, the Dutch hated him so much that when the English came to attack, they gave up their land and themselves to England (the English changed the name to New York)
Pennsylvania was Born!
King Charles II owed William Penn's dad something, but didn't get it to him before the dad died. King Charles II payed back William Penn (the son) with a large piece of land. Pennsylvania was born.
The Forming of New Jersey
The Property of New York now belonged to James, the Duke of York. He could do literally anything with the land. He kept part of the large colony, ( New York), and gave the rest to to friends. ( John Berkley and George Carteret) They named the region East Jersey and West Jersey to form the colony/state of New Jersey.
Why were the Middle Colonies formed?
To make money from rented land and bought land.
Founded because people wanted to escape religious persicution
Peter Minuit bought Manhattan Island and started a settlement called New Amsterdam. He also started a colony for sweeden on the Delaware River in Delaware.

Peter Stuyvesant
Peter Stuyvesant was the governor of New Amsterdam ( New York.) To the people, he was a TERRIBLE governor.The dutch hated him so much,when the English came to attack, they gave themselves up to get rid of him.
William Penn
William Penn was the founder of Pennsylvania and Delaware. ( He founded Delaware because he wanted a" water train" out of Pennsylvania.) Once he got the land, he was fair to the Native Americans.
After the New Netherlands fell to the English, the King of England gave the land to his brother, James.
He then was the colony's leader, or proprietor. He could do anything with the land, so he changed the name to New York.

Ben Franklin
Ben Franklin was a famous Philly citizen. He owned a printing press and he published a series of books. He was also an inventor of a lot of things, such as the lightning rod and Battery.

Did they do?
If you were a farmer in the Middle Colonies , your land would most likely be split or rented.( In NY & NJ) Your food would either count for yourself or be shipped out to other colonies. You would grow wheat and corn.
Laborer and Artisan
If your were a laborer and Artisan, and you were the laborer, you would do physical work in the cities. If you were and Artisan, you would be a skilled at making chairs, silver, and anything by hand.
If you were an artisan or laborer, and if you were the laborer, you would do the physical job in the cities. If you were the Artisan, you would be a skilled worker who lived towards the country-side. You made chairs, silver, and anything made by hand.
Shipping and trading was a big thing in
Philly and New York because they both
had ports and places for shipping and trade.
The Dutch
The Dutch allowed many different cultures and languages in their town/colony.
Their first settlements in New Netherlands were fur trading posts.
The Dutch West India Company looked for people from different countries because they welcomed all people.
New York and New Jersey
The NY and NJ farmers were having trouble controlling their land because they were so far away, in England.
The assembly could elect state representatives for the colony because the proprietors of the land allowed them.
William Penn, who founded PA, was a Quaker which was a religious group who said that they could worship freely.
William Penn, in England, was jailed for believing in his faith, or own religion.
Finally, in Pennsylvania, there was an assembly of people (" The government") They had more power than the government in NY & NJ, by letting them approve and reject laws.
Penn treated the Native Americans with fairness.(The Quakers were naturally friendly people.)
