What happens when you mix an acid and a base?
Procedures
1. Using the funnel, add the baking soda to each balloon (two people may be needed for this; one person to hold the balloon open and the other person to put the baking soda inside of the balloon).
2. Pour the vinegar into the bottle.
Carefully fit the balloon over the bottle opening (be careful not to drop the baking soda into the vinegar yet, don't let it mix).
3. Once the balloon is fitted snugly on the nozzle, hold up the balloon and allow the baking soda to fall into the vinegar.
4. Observe the chemical reaction and effect on the balloon.
5. & Record observations.
APPLICATION
This project could help others by letting them know that when you mix an acid with a base it creates a chemical reaction.

Baking Soda
Background
Baking soda is a white crystalline powder (NaHCO3) better known to chemists as sodium bicarbonate, bicarbonate of soda, sodium hydrogen carbonate, or sodium acid carbonate. It is classified as an acid salt, formed by combining an acid (carbonic) and a base (sodium hydroxide), and it reacts with other chemicals as a mild alkali. At temperatures above 300 degrees Fahrenheit (149 degrees Celsius), baking soda decomposes into sodium carbonate (a more stable substance), water, and carbon dioxide.

Background info on vinegar
The name of the active ingredient in vinegar is called acetic acid.
The chemical formula of acetic acid is CH3CO2H.
Acetic acid is a molecular compound because it is made solely of non-metal elements. When used as a disinfectant, vinegar contains 5% acetic acid.


Abstract
Can vinegar be harmful?
Toxicity:
Since vinegar contains acid, it can be corrosive to living things if its acid concentration is high. If consumed, it will usually be harmless.Environmental Impact:Vinegar has been known to kill plant life, such as grass, if it is poured directly onto the plant. It is safe to pour it down your drain.
Pollutants:Vinegar can be a pollutant if it is added to soil. The soil’s pH level will change because vinegar is acidic. This then kills the living things in the soil.
Chemical interaction:Vinegar should not be mixed with bleach, as it will produce fumes that are toxic if inhaled. Vinegar should not be mixed .
Balloon (1 per student)
Small bottle (cleaned bottle ) (1 per person)
Small funnel (1 per person)
Baking soda (2 tablespoons per person)
Vinegar (4 ounces per person)
Dependent variable - the amount of vinegar.
HYPOTHESIS
If i mix an acid with a base, then the mixture will be able to inflate the balloon.
results
The results were that when i mixed an acid with a base in this case the vinegar and the baking soda, it created a chemical reaction which caused the balloon to inflate. When I put 6 ounces of baking soda with the same amount of vinegar it made the balloon expand to have a width of 9-9.5 inches. When I put 7 ounces of baking soda the balloon expands to have a width of 10 inches, and when i mix the baking soda with the vinegar by putting 8 ounces the balloon had a width of 9-10.5 inches.

reasoning- when you mix an acid with a base it will cause a reaction because my balloon expanded.
evidence - the carbon dioxide filled up the balloon causing it to expand. The reaction stops when you run out of reactants, which in this case was the vinegar as the acid, and the baking soda as the base.

Conclusion
What was investigated in tjis project was to find out if a chemical reaction takes place, and inflates the balloon when a base and an acid are combined. My hypothesis was supported by the data, my major findings was that when you mix an acid with a base it creates a chemical reaction.
