Big Ben is nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. It was previously called ''Clock Tower'', but it was renamed in September 2012 as a tribute of the Diamond Jubille of Queen Elizabeth II. Most people call the tower ''Big Ben'' because it is very large. Big Ben is the biggest four faced, chiming clock in the world.
THE HISTORY OF BIG BEN
History
On 16th October 1834 the Palace of Westminster was destroyed by a fire.
In November 1835, 13 months later, people set up a committe to re-build and they held a competition for designs. More than 400 designs were submitted by more than 90 architects. Working with his trusty assistant Augustus Welby Pugin and Charles Barry added a clock tower to his design, along with four faces, and really big bells. Big Ben was built in 1858 and It was launched in May 1859.

Interesting facts
Big Ben Aden is a clock tower built by British engineers, along with locals, beside Aden Harbour in Yemen during the period that Aden Province (later called Aden Colony) was a territory within the British Empire. It is superficially similar to the Elizabeth Tower (popularly known as Big Ben), the famous clock tower attached to the Palace of Westminster in London. The clock was shut down for renovation about a quarter of a century ago, and returned to service in February 2012. The tower was built during the 19th century as part of the British colonisation of Aden Province, which began in 1839 and came to an end in 1967.
