Born 1945, in Helsinki,Finland. He was born with a birth defect, a double cleft palate and had surgery at 12 months old. 1951, Minkkinen and his family emigrate to the U.S. They move to Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager he worked at a Boy Scout Camp teaching swimming, canoeing, and lifesaving. Arno Rafael Minkinnen Enters Wagner College in 1963, New York as philosophy and religion major, but then switches to English literature in sophomore year. He edits Wagner Literary Magazine in his Junior year. He overcomes his cleft palate complex and dates many beautiful girls throughout the semester. Takes photo course with Ken Heyman Enrolls for summer photography workshop at Apeiron in Millerton, New York under Diane Arbus however it was cancelled and they never met. Studies with John Benson instead. Makes first self portrait on September 2, 1971 1972- First solo exhibition and gets accepted to Rhode Island School of Design 1974-1985- teaches at several Universities 1965- Meets Sandra Hughes at a fraternity party at Wagner College 1969- Marries Sandra Jean Hughes of Dumont, New Jersey 1970- works as a copywriter on Peugeot, J & B Scotch, and Minolta Cameras "What happens inside your mind can happen inside a camera."- Wrote “jingle bells” for J&B Scotch Takes photo course with Ken Heyman Enrolls for summer photography workshop at Apeiron in Millerton, New York under Diane Arbus however it was cancelled and they never met. Studies with John Benson instead. 1972-Takes B & W printing courses at the New School for Social Research with George Tice 1972- First solo exhibition and gets accepted to Rhode Island School of Design 1979-Daniel Hughes Minkkinen is born February 15. 1983-"Father & Son", first showing of self-portraits with Daniel at the Robert Klein Gallery in Boston. 1997- "Body Land" is published by Federico Motta Editore in Milan. "Still Not There" is screened at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris 1999-Begins "Frequent Flyer", a series of linked images spanning continents. 2000-Continues teaching in Maine and Tuscany. Begins working with pinhole cameras. Minkkinen currently lives in Andover, Massachusetts and is a Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts. “I consider myself a documentary photographer. I treat the medium the same way a street shooter does. What happens in front of my camera happens in reality. There are no double exposures, no digital manipulations,” explains Arno Rafael Minkkinen "The most beautiful line in the world is where sky and water touch, but never meet."
