BACHA's Mission
To provide well-rounded and diverse professional and para-professional development opportunities for housing and residence life educators in the Boston area. This will be accomplished by:

1.Supporting student development theories and practices in the residence hall setting.

2.Encouraging the maintenance and improvement of professional standards in the field of housing and residence life.

3.Annually setting and prioritizing goals and objectives.

4.Offering a forum for exchange of ideas and information through conferences, committees, projects and general meetings.
The History of NESAPC
The New England Student Affairs Placement Conference (NESAPC) is one of BACHA's signature events. This is a great opportunity for local candidates and employers to job search in a smaller, more relaxed setting. We are proud to say that NESAPC attracts schools not only from the Boston area, but also from greater New England and beyond. New York, Delaware, New Jersey, Vermont, Maryland and Florida have all been represented in recent years. Many fresh graduates, both those who have just completed graduate programs and those coming right out of undergrad, target this conference as a great way to break into the field. While NESAPC does tend to attract mostly Residence Life positions, all student affairs related job opportunities are welcomed.

So what do you do if you aren't getting interviews?
This is Caitlin, a Regis Host, she's pretty excited that you're attending!
NESAPC will be held in the newly renovated Maria Hall on June 1st and 2nd.
We have designated lounges just for candidates to relax and refocus.

While we do not have a photo, we would like to share that interviews will take place in vacant suite style residence rooms of Maria Hall.

Get familiar with the location: learn the layout, check mailbox regularly, stay focused, take time for yourself.
The Fishbowl Concept:
Conference attendees are everywhere.
Avoid negativity in yourself and others.
SA is a small field, we know everyone, and we talk.
When not interviewing; attend sessions, network, or take time for yourself.

Avoid Large Prints, Floral Prints, and Animal Print

Be relaxed, but confident.
Be sincere and listen carefully.
Create natural amount of eye contact.
Be able to state specific goals.
Be friendly, but not pushy.
Express Interest.
Know issues and trends in Higher Education
Pause before answering, it's okay to take a few seconds to formulate an answer.
Assert yourself/ strengths.
Translate skills into the employer's needs.
Give examples to support your answers.
Use action verbs in responses.
Be on time, meaning arrive early.
Dress professionally
Watch body language- Professional posture and create friendly non-verbal cues.
Speak with confidence and enthusiasm.
A wonderful professor once said "Change your mindset about the interview process, isn't it awesome that all of these people are interested in getting to know you?"
You've worked hard to get where you are now. Take a few breaths, relax, and come into this with a positive mindset, but don't forget to prepare!
You are not powerless in your role- Be an active contributor to your interview, interviews should feel like really engaging conversations.
The NESAPC Committee has put together a few tips for your interview process success.
Do not use slang, talk over someone else, or argue.
Do not be critical or negative.
Do not be defensive or intimidated.
Do not chew gum, smoke beforehand, or tap table.
Do not tell jokes.
Do not look at the floor.
Do not put interviewers on the spot.
Do not beg, boast, or exaggerate.
Do not be overeager.
Do not evade questions.
Do not get into too many details.
Do not talk in generalities.
Do not be late.
Do not waste time or repeat yourself.
Do not act too informal.
Do not bring social life into interview.
Do not interrupt employer.
Do not be afraid to ask questions
Do not delay the interviewer.
Do not compare to current institution.
Do not volunteer personal information; especially values, associations, and bad experiences.
Do not race through your answers.
Continue to write Thank You notes for all of those you interviewed with. Be sure to personalize it.
Send follow-up e-mails with positions or institutions that interest you.
Withdrawal from positions or institutions that no longer interest you.
Do not stop your search, NESAPC should not be your only option.
Be patient! It's a busy time for everyone involved.
Continue to network with other professionals in the area.
Join professional organizations in the area.

Never point out that it is illegal, rather respectfully decline to answer, and spin the conversation back to your qualifications.

How does all of this affect the job you are applying for? Be sure to research the institution!
Use specific examples of skills/ experience.
Have a "why" for applying to each job.
Know the position.
Refer to your resume.
Have questions prepared- Do your homework!
Be consistent.
Never take notes during the interview, only take notes immediately following so you can refer to details in a thank you note or on-campus interview.
Before the Interview Process
Practice in self-reflection: what are your strengths and weaknesses?
Practice, practice, practice.
Prepare questions in advance pertaining to responsibilities, challenges, opportunities for involvement, staff development, job analysis, supervisor communication, and accountability.
Psych yourself up- be excited and positive!
How are the working relationships with other departments on campus?
Can you describe the community profile?
How much contact would I have with my supervisor?
How much input do students have in evaluating and formulating policy? Ask for examples.
What type of in-service or other professional training is available for staff?
What is the culture of support around professional development?
What are some of the departmental goals for the upcoming year?
In what ways is your program growing?
What do you like most about the institution? Where are some of the challenging areas?
What type of autonomy can I expect?
What is the decision making process?
What are your expectations of this position?
Explain the evaluation/ feedback system.
Is there institutional support for student affairs?
Have there been any recent budget cuts? (Shows where the value of the institution is not).
Tell me about yourself.
Why are you interested in this position?
Why do you want to work for us?
What type of work environment do you like best?
What motivates you?
How would this position challenge you?
What skills could you bring to our office?
What are the top three issues that are impacting today's college students?
What kind of relationship do you want to have with your supervisor?
How will this position help you in advancing your career/ reaching career goals?
What sets you apart from other candidates?
Tell me about a time when you had to confront a difficult situation.
Tell me about your time management skills.
Tell me about a time you had to address a crisis?
What skills can you bring to our office?
