Granville T. Woods (Inventor) Who Was Granville? He was Black
-Important Factor in his life Why? Did he continue and why was being black Important? -Dubbed "The Black Edison"
-Defined Modern Era -Had little financial support
-Struggled throughout whole life AND -Always looked down upon and racial prejuduce
-Up against big white corporations who wanted to
buy his ideas cheap because he couldn't afford Patent -Only kept inventing becuase he had brilliant ideas and wanted to express them
-Wanted to support family and gain finacial stability
-Wanted to afford to patent his inventions What did he do to make him important and famous? -1884 First Patent (Improved Steam Engine)
-Next two patents for telephone signal transmitter
and figured out how to combine telegraph and telephone
machine into one. -1885 biggest invention of lifetime
(Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph)
-With help from Lucius Phelps Book -Was an electrical inventor
-Considered to be one of the greatest ever -Proved against racial prejuduce that Blacks were not less intelectual. When did some important things in his life happen? -Born April 23, 1856 in Australia(immigrate to U.S.)
-Unsure when immigrated to U.S.
-Died January 30, 1910 in New York -At 15 worked as a mechanic for a year

-Went to market his inventions and ideas
-Also attempt to find financial support How did he make it through his whole life with little support and racial prejuduce? -Only afforded one or 2 patents with his own money -To survive had to market ideas to lawyers and companies to get them to sponsor his plans -Occasionally he went to lawyers who realized the genius of his invention and smelled big money so they sponsored his patents' most of the time. -Often went to courts to fight over legal rights of his patents
-Drained him of more money
-Worse legal court debate was with Phelps over the Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph -Accuired smallpox in the 1890's
-Most likely cause for early death In the End
-Even though Ganville had many brilliant ideas, he never really was completely succesfull in all aspects of life; especially financially
-Also had trouble with family life and married twice
