The legal penalties for copyright infringement are:

Infringe pays the actual dollar amount of damages and profits.
The law provides a range from $200 to $150,000 for each work infringed.
Infringe pays for all attorneys fees and court costs.
The Court can issue an injunction to stop the infringing acts.
The Court can impound the illegal works.
The infringe can go to jail.

How can Infringement be prevented?
Give a copyright notice to all original works.
file a copyright with the government
Use the copy scape plagiarism to check for online copyright theft.

Copyright Law:
Copyright is a federal law that allows authors to control their work for a limited period of time. The copyright must be original work
How does "public domain" apply to your topic? The copy right has expired therefore the public may use it without violating the copyright laws.

How does the copyright law affect teens?
About 80% of the teens could turn into criminals because of copyright.They don't think about the consequences of copy and pasting something off the Internet and putting it off as their own.
