Hollywood Star System The Linear & Non-Linear Narrative Linear narrative follows the development of a story from
the beginning, through the middle, to the end, in chronological order. Linear Narrative (Classical Hollywood Style) Non-Linear Narrative (French New Wave et al) A means of storytelling, but not necessarily showing events in chronological order. Revelations are left to the storyteller and the audience is left guessing. Subversion of time: Flash-backs or are they? We shall examine how both films deal with the subversion of narrative time in the form of 'flash backs' Firstly, "Casablanca" flash back scene as Rick remembers Paris. Note use of time compression. "Last year in Marienbad".
Note the progression of scene switches between the bar and the bedroom.
It is worth noting that there is nothing to indicate
whether this is a past memory or present fantasy. Examples of lighting techniques 180 degree rule Editing Narrative Star System Task 1 Introduction History Subversion of time 180 deg rule Lighting Observance of 180 degree rule means that characters remain facing one another on the 'correct' side.
This ensures that viewers are unaware of editing and accept spatial placement.
Classical Hollywood Style editing French New Wave editing Less adherence to the 180 degree rule, often
