The History Of Fairy Tales
The Origins Of Fairy Tales
The Genre Of Fairy Tales
Brothers Grimm

Most of the original tales used to include a vast amount of violence but still had the same theme of good vs. evil, heroes vs. villains that we have today. German tales had earned them selves quite a reputation for including an excessive amount of carnage and cruelty. In contrast French tales are more comical and realistic. A lot of fairy tales have deep roots in oral folk tradition.

Many fairy tales have been written over the years, changed, developed, re written, edited. One German duo, The Brothers Grimm are a famous example, they wrote and re -wrote many fairy tales. Although the pair are famous for their graphic, gruesome and, sometimes, moralled tales, they have been edited and cleaned up over the years to suit society, so these once amazing stories have been shortened and lost.

The Brothers collection is (the biggest) one of the biggest collection of fairy tales. The books can include traditional and beautiful drawings.

This Tv series is a cop show with a twist, fairy tales were a warning they're actually real. Each 'Wesen' has a name which are all german, for example Blutbad means bloodbath and this 'Wesen' looks like a wolf and a Hexenbiest is a witch.
Once Upon A Time is a tv series based on the fact that in this show all the fairytales are linked but the fairy tale characters have been cursed into our world and have no idea about their former life.

The fairy tale genre is a generic label for magical stories for kids. The term fairy tale comes from the french term conte de fées. This term came from 17th century tales written for adults but now these tales have been simplified and adapted for children's reading, like Cinderella and sleeping beauty.

Charles Perrault was a french author who laid down the foundations for a new genre, fairy tales. His tales were based off of pre existing folk tales. Some of his most famous work would be Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard). The majority of his tales were rewritten later by the brothers grimm but have also been adapted into opera and ballet.

In the Grimm's version of Rapunzel, Rapunzel's parents weren't royalty. When her mother was pregnant she had a craving for Rapunzel and told her husband once she started to waste away that if she didn't have any she would die. So the man would sneak into the enchantresses garden to steal some Rapunzel but the mothers appetite for it grew more each time she ate some. One time the enchantress caught the man and demanded that in return she would be given the child. When Rapunzel turned 12 she was taken into the woods and locked up in a tower. One day a prince came by and herd her singing and told him self that he would meet her. One day he did and so her asked her to marry him and she said yes but she would have to create her own ladder to get down. But once mother Gothel found out she cut off Rapunzel's hair and banished her into the wilderness. The next time that the prince visited he was blinded by the enchantress and wandered the wilderness alone mourning his lost wife. For many years the prince was wandering and Rapunzel was raising her twins when they saw each other again. When they did the prince regained his sight and they both went back to his kingdom and lived happily ever after.

Tangled is a 2010 Disney animation based loosely on The Brothers Grimm Rapunzel. The film still has the classic princess locked away in a tower with beautiful long golden hair but instead of a prince 'saving' her a thief 'saves' who she then predictably falls in love with. It still links to the original tale where her hair gets chopped off but it was never magical. Unlike The Brothers version wasn't very comical but it could be if you read between the lines and saw how very stupid Rapunzel really was, the film though was funny with all that frying pan business. So, although the two versions are very different they are also quite similar with their few links.
This version of the tale tells of a little girl who everyone likes. And the person who loved her the most was her grandmother. One time her grandmother made her a little red hood made of red velvet which the girl always wore. That's how she became Little Red Riding Hood. Her mother said to her one day that that she had to take some cake and wine up to her grandmother as she was ill and that would make her stronger. She was told not to stray off the path of the woods and not to poke around in all the corners of the house. Little Red Riding hood promised not to. When she was in the forest she encountered a wolf who asked her where she was going and what she was carrying, she answered him with the truth. She told him where her grandmother lived and in return he told her that she should pick some flowers for her grandmother as she had plenty of time. So while she was doing that the wolf snuck into the grandmothers house, swallowed her whole and dressed up like her, waiting for little red riding hood. As Little Red Riding hood entered the house she thought something was off but still went to her grandmothers bedroom which then followed with the famous lines about ears and eye. Once the wolf said the last line he swallowed Little Red Riding Hood whole as well and then fell asleep snoring very loud. At one point a huntsman walked past the house and heard the snoring so went inside to see if there was anything wrong and when he saw the wolf he realised that he must of eaten the grandmother so cut open the wolfs belly and Little Red Riding Hood jumped out followed by her grandmother. Little Red Riding Hood gathered stones and put them into the wolfs belly and they then stitched him back up so that when the wolf woke up and tried to run off he would collapse and die. The huntsman skinned the wolf and then they ate and drank all of the wine and cake.

Red Riding Hood is a 2011 film based loosely on the tale Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault which was later re written by The Brothers Grimm. This film is a 'dark fantasy, thriller and horror' film which means that it does relate to the original tales with there dark themes. In this film there is a wolf who terrorizes a little village which has to sacrifice its cattle stock to the wolf in exchange for their lives. This film differs from the tale as the wolf is in fact a werewolf as well as the wolf being related to a main character.
