THE CELEBRATED JUMPING FROG OF CALAVERAS COUNTY BY MARK TWAIN BIOGRAPHY PLOT Mark Twain was born on November 30, 1835. Early 1860's in a small mining town called Angel's Camp. Exposition Conflict Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution The Narrator left because Simon Wheeler didn't tell him anything about Leonidas W. Smiley. Jim Smiley always had to cheat to win. The stranger filled Jim Smiley's frog will quail shot. Jim Smiley trained a frog to jump high, and catches flys on command. The mare won the race because she was given a head start, since Jim Wheeler said she had asthma Jim Smiley loses the jumping contest to the stranger. Jim Smiley finds the quail shot in his frogs mouth. Mark Twain's birth name is Samuel Clemens. Twain's passion for writing was inspired by the work he did at his brother's newspaper company. Twain married Olivia Langdon on February 2, 1870 and had 4 kids; Landon, Jean, Susy, and Clara. Twain went into major depression when his daughter Susy passed away from Meningitis in 1896. This story took place in a small mining town called Angel's Camp. At Angel's Camp Twain first heard someone tell the story that he later developed into "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". As a miner and a journalist Mark Twain probably heard and read dozens of tall tales. Mark Twain began working as a typesetter and contributor of articles and humorous sketches for the Hannibal Journal. 1851 Samuel Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 Mark Twain begins a two year apprenticeship to become a river pilot. 1857 Mark Twain fails as a miner and works as a reporter 1862 Mark Twain publishes "The Celebrated Frog of Calaveras County". 1865 1835 1870 Mark Twain marries Olivia "Livy" Langdon IMPORTANCE OF THE SETTING
