Human Development Index (HDI) ETHIOPIA (Low HDI) Poverty Education Literacy Living Conditions Farming Economics Ethiopia has a very low HDI for many reasons. Famines were mostly caused by the large elite class oppressing the poor. There is rich farmland in many parts of the country. It is very underdeveloped as shown by the undesirable living conditions and low life expentancy at birth. The elite puts very little time into considering education for it's people, making it hard to gain knowledge and help their economic situation. The poverty show how little a major part of the population get money-wise, making them able to spend their money on basic necessities.
