In the 16th century the first condoms appeared. Originally they were designed to "protect against syphilis." Eventually the condoms were quickly noticed as a good contraceptive (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 16).
The first condoms have influenced sexuality today because they are so widely used and easily accessible. The work when trying to prevent pregnancy.
Scientists use microscopes to see sperm for the first time ever. Many scientists couldn't believe that the sperm could be responsible for makinga human life. (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 15)
Seeing sperm for the first time eventually led to scientists believing that a human would not grow until it reached the "female nest." (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 15)
Many people believe that the sexual revolution began recently, but studies show that the greatest increases in sex before marriage began in the 1920's. "35-45% of females and 55-65% of males" were having sex before marriage within 1920-1970. (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 12)
This event has a significant influence in today's sexuality because many people are still having sex before marriage.
The introduction of the Bikini has had a huge influence on today's sexuality. Many people wear them. They have caused a lot of controversy with religious believes as well as with the media. Any time we see a bikini model we see a photoshoped girl who looks perfect in society's view. This influences many teens today. (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 13)
"The Pill" being introduced into mainstream culture had a huge impact on sexuality today. It was the beginning of the modern era of contraception. It has become easily accessed and very commonly used. (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 13)
William Masters and Virginia Johnson worked on human sexual response. They contributed to knowledge about how adults function sexually and why they sometimes don't. They also provided the foundation for sexual counseling. (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 13)
They impacted sexuality today with their research and foundation for sexual counseling.
The U.S. Supreme Court case Roe Vs. Wade legalized a woman's right to have an abortion. Women could now decide to terminate her pregnancy before the "fetus could survive independently of the woman's body." (Greenberg, J.S., Bruess, C.E., Oswalt, S.B., pg. 17)
This has caused a lot of controversy but also has an influence on sexuality today. A woman has the right to choose if she wants to take her unwanted pregnancy to fulll term.
