Transcript of What about flappers?

In the 1920s, a new woman was born. She smoked, drank, danced, and voted. She cut her hair, wore make-up, and went to petting parties. She was giddy and took risks. She was a flapper. Who were the so called "Flappers"? A person that is just starting something, like a bird yet in the nest and vainly trying to fly while it's wings aren't strong enough. What does the term "flapper" mean? "Tubular" style, less physical form:
Dresses stopped at the knee
Hiplines lowered
Less emphasis on breasts
From the shoulders straight down
Short bobbed hair
Cloche "bell" hat
Style from the WWI aviators
Necklaces represented the presence of the art deco, cubist and african art movements Flappers were a kind of "new breed" of women that tried to make their way into what american society was at that time, like a bird that's attempting to leave the nest and see the world for themselves. How does the term relate to women? How was their style? She was the head of the flapper style designers, creating the loose women's jersey, releasing them from the tightness and stiffness of the corset. It soon became very popular among clients for whom the corset seemed old-fashion and impractical. Chanel became a style icon herself with her striking bob haircut and tan placing her at the cutting edge of modern style. Coco A quick view to the past:
Women had very few rights in 1900 and certainly no political rights. If married, they stayed at home to look after the children while their husband worked and brought in a weekly wage. If single, they did work which usually involved some form of service such as working as a waitress, cooking etc. Many young women were simply expected to get married and have children. Why did they start acting like that? It was an era of grace , dedicated to time-honored values and traditions. The silhouette of the early 1900 dame was curved, flowing and extremely feminine. Maturity, sophistication and superiority were well known traits for these extremely well-bred ladies. Totally opposite to what flappers were. Fashion in the 1900 Chanel FLAPPERS
