Let's devise these together.......... What does pacifism mean? WHY SOME CHRISTIANS ARE PACIFISTS:

Jesus taught that Christians should not resist evil and if they are hit on the right cheek, they should turn and offer the left.

Jesus also said that Christians should love their enemies.

Christian pacifists take these to mean that they should not fight in wars. WHY SOME CHRISTIANS ARE PACIFISTS:

2. Jesus and Peter

"Put your sword back in it's place for all who draw the sword will die by the sword." WHY SOME CHRISTIANS ARE PACIFISTS:

3. Fifth Commandment

What is it?

WHY SOME CHRISTIANS ARE PACIFISTS:

SOME CHRISTIANS BELIEVE IN A JUST WAR:


WHY? Generally agreed that war is just if:

The cause of war is just i.e self defence.

Fought by the authority of the UN.

Fought with the intention of restoring peace.

Last resort-when all other methods have failed.

Reasonable chance of success. Wrong to waste lives if there is no chance of achieving its aim.

Method avoid loss of civilian life although does not ban accidental bombing.

Methods used are proportional to the cause. WHY SOME CHRISTIANS BELIEVE IN A JUST WAR:

1. It is the teaching of all main churches such as the Catholic, Anglican, Methodist and Baptist.

2. St. Paul said that Christians have to obey the orders of the government because governments are authorised by God.

WHY SOME CHRISTIANS BELIEVE IN A JUST WAR:

4. Paying Taxes

'Give to Caesar what is Caesar's.'

Which many Christians interpret as an acceptable reason to fight in a just war ordered by the government.

4. A police force is necessary to protect innocent people from criminals. Same applies to an army ready to fight just wars in order to protect the innocent countries from the criminal ones. HOT SEAT ACTIVITY

It's 2003 and war is imminent, you have the opportunity to appear in a live debate:

In your groups think of questions you could ask:

George Bush regarding his stance that the war in Iraq was a just war.
AND

Barack Obama about his anti war stance based upon his belief in Pacifism.

You will take turns in the 'Hot Seat' and be George Bush or Barack Obama. You will have one minute to field as many questions from your peers. Lesson notes available via:
