This leads to personal..
"SLEEP NO MORE! MACBETH DOES
Sleeplessness leads to bad outcomes...
She is frantically trying
to wash imaginary blood
off her hands
when she should be sleeping.
She is looking at a mirror
She is reflecting on her decisions
A great perturbation in nature
Sleep symbolises peace, order and a clean conscience.
It can be argued that she does NOT feel
but instead feels regret for the outcome of her actions
because people are starting to feel suspicous of herself and Macbeth.
The audience can infer this as she only sleepwalks after Macbeth 's outburst at the royal banquet.
This means it is likely that she becomes sleepless only when people become suspicious of her.
banquet, Macbeth sees the ghost of his friend
During a royal banquet, Macbeth sees the ghost of his FRIEND
Macbeth sent people to
"My worthy lord, your noble friends do lack you"
It is unclear to the audience if Banquo's ghost is there
or if it is a manifestation of Macbeth's troubled mind.
ONLY Macbeth can see the
"Pr'ythee, see there!
How say you?"
Either way the ghost has a psychological effect on Macbeth.
He becomes paranoid and questions the loyalty of his subjects.
Macbeth's reaction to the ghost causes his friends to question his sanity.
The audience also witness Macbeth's mental degregation.
The mirror symbolises the deep peronal reflection of Lady Macbeth.
Shakespeare uses the symbolism of the mirror to emphasise how Lady Macbeth is unsure of what to do.
It reinforce to the audiene how Lady Macbeth is feeling regret for her part in the murders.
When Lady Macbeth is sleepwalking, it reveals her subconscious thoughts.
She is forced to express what she actually feels.
The murder of
and the murder of Banquo
Considering Mabeth was a soldier and Lady Macbeth organised the killings, it is unexpected to see the mental issues they face.
The mental and social consequences are so severe because was
directly chosen by
These were a set of political beliefs that society held in Macbeth's time
The Divine Right of Kings
The Great Chain of Being
People believed that kings recieved their power from
People believed that there was a hierachy amongst all matters of life .
At the top of the chain was
was one of the highest ranks and below him were his subjects.
Duncan Macbeth breaks these two beliefs:
GOD DID NOT COOSE MACBETH TO BE KING
The world around Macbeth unravels as the natural hierachy is broken. All of nature is effected.
By definition as long as Macbeth is acting as the king, the world will never be orderly.
Apart from killing the
Duncan was staying in Macbeth's home
He was Macbeth's guest.
this is another reson why Macbeth should not have murdered him.
Macbeth should have done everything in his power to protect Duncan.
It was socially unacceptable to harm someone under your protection.
What Macbeth did was also cowardly.
To kill Duncan in his sleep was the easy option. It was almost insulting to kill the king in such a gutless way.
While the king was asleep he could not fight back against Macbeth.
Macbeth and Lady Macbeth know that killing
was unnacceptable because; it was against the Divine Right of kings and The Great Chain Of Being Ideas, Duncan was a guest in Macbeth's home and Duncan was sleeping.
IT WAS WRONG
These reasons all culmunate into the extreme reactions of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.
The natural balance is disrupted.
Their subjects lose all loyalty.
Lady Macbeth knows she cannot stay in power forever.
She feels emmotional regret and psycological pain.
Her time is up.
Macbeth FIGHTS to stay in power.
He ignores all advice
He bravely fights an entire army.
Death is inevitable.
The rightful heir is now king.
Some things cannot be overcome.
