1900 - received into Catholic church
1904 - Mother died (diabetes)
Brought up by Priest, Father Francis Morgan R.I.P Age 7 - learned Latin and Greek * Love for languages
Excellent scholar @ young age
Invented several languages of his own Age 16 - met Edith Bratt - love
Morgan prohibited seeing until age 21
Waited faithfully - sought her out * Wed on March 22, 1916 Attended college Soon enlisted and served in WWI
Fought in Somme - active duty on Western Front Succumbed to "trench fever" - Sent home in early Nov. Trench conditions were far from sanitary and it was often a place for diseases to fester Lost many friends - very devastating
Believed to have compared "Mordor" experiences and sights of war Retired (1959) - moved to Bournemouth (England)
Died of pneumonia on September 2, 1973

Originally thought of "The Hobbit" as a child's story
1930 -> unexpected insp. to write "The Hobbit"
While grading examination paper, jotted in margins: "In a hole in the ground, there lived a Hobbit." Drew on knowledge of mythology, folk-tales, & languages - Created Middle Earth
Published - Stanley Uwin (1937)
Encouraged for sequel LOTR "grew in telling" (15 yrs)
