Transcript of The Kingdom of Kush/Nubia

1600-1100 B.C.E. Kush was far south of the Mediterranean Sea,West of the red sea, and along the Nile river. The Kushites had access to 3 different water sources. The water sources could be used for irrigating crops, bathing, protection from outsiders, transportation, and even hunting. Kushs' Largest (and just about only) contribution that affects modern society is being the first people in africa to use iron-based weapons. From about 1000 B.C.E to about 1000 C.E, was the Iron Age. Kush was known as the Iron Capitol of the world. Contributions The Kingdom of Kush/Nubia By: Vall Delaney, Mae Mae Macy and Jessica Mendoza Geography Economy/Trade Kush was a major trade center. The main proucts they traded for were ebony, horses, oxen, camels, gold, vory, slaves, donkeys, skins, and feathers. (All of which was important.) Arts Kush made a lot of art that had different things. They made potery, pyramids, and many other things. They built temples out of durable material which was red fired-bricks and stones. The artifact they built the most was temples that had different reasons of the use. Slavery Kush did different things with their slaves. They used Prisoners of war as slaves. Prisoners of war for Kush were people who were kidnapped and kept as prisoners from Egypt. They also traded slaves for other goods. Technology The golden age was towards the end of the new kingdom when egypt was in decline. Kush had gold and other precious gemstones, along with large supplies of granite and limestone. The change of power was because of cultural mixing. Kush believed in some of the same gods as egypt, and the egyptians valued the Nubian's way of dicipline. Golden age Rise and Fall The rise of kush occured when they took advantage of Egypt's decline. King Kashta brought upper egypt into kush. His son Piye later obtained the rest of Egypt. This civilization fell once it was invaded by the assyrians. The Kushites' are most known for being the first in Africa to use iron weapons; which was considered their 'technology.' According to Kushite (Nubian) beliefs, before creation, the world was all covered with water. Then a mound of earth has risen out of the water. On top of this mound, Atum the first god on earth, was born. Atum then gave birth to Shu, the first man on earth, and Tefnut, the first woman goddess. Shu and Tefnu married and gave birth to Geb (the god of Earth) and Nut (god of the Skies). Geb and Nut then were responsible for giving birth to the most important gods in Nubia, Osiris (god of the pharaohs) and Seth (god of devastation), and Isis (god of motherhood)and Nephthys (protector of the dead). Atum signified the concept of creation. Atum was also believed to have created the heavens and earth. He was portrayed as an old man and sometimes with a ram head in connection to Amon. Religion/Beliefs Arts Writing Government Time period The people mostly worked on large monuments like pyramids and temples. They made things huge; up to 25 acres. They mostly kept themselves busy on building temples. They used backed-mud bricks and stones to build different arts. The Kushites used graffiti inscriptions for writing things. They wrote in hieroglyphs, hieratic, and demotic scripts. Phonology was used frequently in Kush to represent consonants. Their alphabet included only 23 letters. Nubians never had a stable government because their laws would always change. They would always be under some attack without knowing. They were never prepared to fight because all the attacks were unsuspected. The only method of government that worked was the Kandake system. They had also tried using kings. The time period of kush was 3100 to 1000 B.C. This was the Bronze Age. This was a long time ago, when they still used slaves. Around 3800 B.C was when they settled next to the Nile River. Around 1500 B.C, they were under Egyptian rule. In 380 A.D, their civilization started to delcine. In 250, Kush was at its flourishing time. A Nubian Society Is it Kush or Nubia?? Kush conquered Nubia. Kush was conquered in turn. We call the region Kush/Nubia, but the ancestors of these people think of themselves as Nubian.
