And the pledge of nation that’s passed away
Keep it, dear friend, and show it,
Show it to those who will lend an ear
To the tale this trifle will tell
Of liberty, both of patriot’s dream,
Of a storm-cradled nation that fell.(Gone With the Wind, Mitchell:p507)

Theory Basic:
polysystem theory
“neither the word, nor the text, but the culture becomes the operational unit of translation. ”
Literature system
two main factors:

Professionals
Patronage
Rewriting
Cultural turn
Pork lit one lamp and three candles and, with the pompous dignity of a first chamberlain of the royal bedchamber lighting a king and queen to their rooms, he led the procession up the stairs, holding the light high above his head.

It was the treat of the convent that finally won the assent of bewildered and heartstricken Pierre Robillard.( Gone With the Wind, Mitehell)
Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those whom we cannot resemble.

Rewriting
“Translation is a rewriting of the original text. All rewritings, whatever their intention, reflect a certain ideology and a poetics and as such manipulate literature to function in a given society in a given way”

three main factors
poetics
patronage
ideology respectively

Poetics consists of two components:

an inventory of literary devices, genres, motifs, prototypical , characters and situations, and symbols
a concept of what the role a literature is,or should be,in the social system as a whole

Patronage Manipulation
Publishing house is benefit—oriented, it tries its best to make the readers satisfy with the novel and to make the novel enjoy great popularity
EG
Ideology
Ideology could be regarded as opinions and attitudes accepted in a certain society at a certain time.
“When giving the words of gods, these words should be given forth simply.” This might be taken as the sole literary creed of the Chinese novelist, to whom, indeed, gods were men and men were gods.

In the beginning, the Troop had been recruited exclusively from the sons of planters, a gentleman’s outfit, each man supply in his own horse, arms, equipment, Uniform and body servant.
“On Individuality, As One of the Elements of Wellbeing”

so please my lord. I might not be admitted; but from her handmaid do return this answer; the element itself, till seven years’heat, shall not behold her face at ample view.

Review
Contribute
opens up new perspectives
broadening translation studies from the text to the cultural field
Limit
definitions are too broad
translator’ motility factors are not able to be get exploration
Conclusion
Lefevere attaches great importance to the decisive role the three factors, many ideology, patronage and poetics, play on translation, which is a new contribution to translation. Whereas the three terms are too general and can only figure out the general aspect of social context of literature which cannot further instruct our translation studies.
