The Passion of Christ and the Martyrs
*Highlighting some thoughts from Jerry Rankin, “The Passion of Christ and the Martyrs” in Mike Barnett, ed., Discovering the Mission of God: Best Missional Practices for the 21st Century (IVP 2012), 171-184.
- an intense desire for something
Wrong understanding of passion for God's mission
- a belief in human strategies
with regard to God's mission
E.g., send money to support local missionaries and don't ask for an account (seems to be less expensive than sending missionaries)
will not accomplish anything lasting in regards to the mission of God
- he came to seek and to save those who are lost (Luke 19:10)
- to make Christ known to those who have not heard about him (Romans 15:20)
- called to follow Christ's example who suffered for us (1 Peter 2:21)
- “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church.” (church father Tertullian)
The passion that will fulfill the mission of God includes
- a love for God that is willing to give up all for the sake of the nations
- a call to suffer and die which is considered normal (Matthew 16:24)
- an understanding of the Great Commission as an unqualified mandate
(anywhere, anytime, any cost)
- an eternal perspective on the earthly life (future glory cannot be compared with
current sufferings; 1 Peter 5:1)
- a confidence in God's sovereignty (overrules evil to accomplish his purpose)
Baptismal vow inspired by the passion of Christ
"You do not take my life from me,
but I offer it freely to you
as a testimony of faith in Jesus Christ
who loved me and gave his life for me.”

There are no regrets
My calling is to obedience,
suffering is expected,
and His glory is my reward.
