Transcript: Wisdom does not flow like water Plato’s Critique of Pederasty Pederasty Background Symposium Pederasty My Project Pausanias' Speech Pausanias' Speech Two Aphrodites Uranian Heavenly Pandemos Common Text Text Pictures Pictures "Here, Socrates, lie down alongside me, so that by my touching you, I too may enjoy the piece of wisdom that just occurred to you while you were in the porch. It is plain that you found it and have it, for otherwise you would not have come away beforehand." Agathon and Socrates “It would be a good thing, Agathon, if wisdom were the sort of thing that flows from the fuller of us into the emptier, just by our touching one another, as the water in wine cups flows through a wool thread from the fuller to the emptier. For if wisdom too is like that, then I set a high price on my being placed alongside you, for I believe I shall be filled from you with much fair wisdom. My own may turn out to be a sorry sort of wisdom, or disputable like a dream; but your own is brilliant and capable of much development, since it has flashed out so intensely from you while you are young; and yesterday it became conspicuous among more than thirty thousand Greek witnesses." "You are outrageous, Socrates," Agathon said. "A little later you and I will go to court about our wisdom, with Dionysus as judge, but now first attend to dinner." how water flows Principle at play When they do engage in a contest about love Timeline YEAR Alcibiades' Speech Socrates, he claims, is like “those silenuses that sit in the shops of herm sculptors, the ones that craftsman make holding reed pipes or flutes; and if they are split in two and opened up they show they have images of gods within.” (215b) Alcibiades' Speech You, in my opinion,' I said, 'have proved to be the only deserving lover of mine; and it seems to me that you hesitate to mention it to me. Now I am in this state: I believe it is very foolish not to gratify you in this or anything else of mine—my wealth or my friends—that you need; for nothing is more important to d me than that I become the best possible; and I believe that, as far as I am concerned, there is no one more competent than you to be a fellow helper to me in this. So I should be far more ashamed before men of good sense for not gratifying a man like you than I should be before the many and senseless for gratifying you.' Seduction Scene 'Really, my dear Alcibiades, you're no sucker if what you say about me is really true and there is some power in me e through which you could become better. You must see, you know, an impossible beauty in me, a beauty very different from the fairness of form in yourself. So if, in observing my beauty, you are trying to get a share in it and to exchange beauty for beauty, you are intending to get far the better deal. For you are trying to acquire the truth of beautiful things in exchange for the seeming and opinion of beautiful things; and you really have in mind to exchange "gold for bronze." But blessed one do consider better: Without your being aware of it—I may be nothing. Thought, you know, begins to have keen eyesight when the sight of the eyes starts to decline from its peak; and you are still far from that.' Conclusion conclusion If Socrates were to have sex with Alcibiades, he would perpetuate: 1) the idea that people can make each other wise. impact: prevent Alcibiades from realizing his ignorance about wisdom 2) Alcibiades belief that his physical attractiveness is the most important thing about him impact: the belief could harm Alcibiades as he begins to decline from his physical peak, when “Thought begins to have keen eyesight.” (219a) 3) Socrates would be no better than the sophists who cannot acknowledge the ways in which they are ignorant, and thus, risk self-deception. Advantages Advantages to my account: -Fits with the well-known picture of a Socrates who: 1) proclaims his own ignorance. 2) critiques the Sophists for i. both not acknowledging what they do not know ii. exchanging money for wisdom -Makes explicit the way Plato critiques the customs of his time -Throws into question a vision of Socrates as someone who consistently denies bodily urges -Makes clear that the container model is supposed to function in opposition to the image of pregnancy and birth. Accounts of “Plato’s Appropriation of Reproduction” run these two images together.

Transcript: Joyce : Second Presenter * Rely completely upon converting electricity to light * Typically produce only around 200 nits of light *The metallic cathode in an OLED acts as a mirror, with reflectance approaching 80% Problems Faced by OLED Display Circular polarizer Poor Outdoor Performance Poor Color Balance What is OLED? Ways to overcome the problems: WRGB OLED Q & A 1- The plastic, organic layers of an OLED are thinner, lighter and more flexible. 2- OLEDs are brighter than LEDs. 3- OLEDs do not require backlighting like LCDs therefore it consume less power. 4- OLEDs are easier to produce and can be made to larger sizes. 5- OLEDs have large fields of view, about 170 degrees. OLED Structure Thank you for listening :) Related Articles and News Contents : OLED; Disadvantages Ways to overcome the problems: Haida : Preparing the PPT * Organic materials which are used to produce blue color degrades relatively faster than other materials. * Plastic-film stack, combination of quarter-wave retarder and linear polarizer. * Blocks interface reflections generated below the front surface. Sunlight readability, popular with OLEDs and resistive touch. Less Distortion = More Consistent Wide Viewing RGB + WHITE = Greater Color Accuracy Anti-reflection coatings Advantages Reasons: 1- Short lifespan. 2- Expensive manufacture. 3- Can be easily damage by water. 4- Poor outdoor performance. 5- Power consumption 6- Poor color balance * Make OLED with artificial blue tints ~ causes the OLED to look artificial and over saturated. ~ causes a problem called screen burn-in; differences between red, blue and green. * Addition a white layer in RGB is introduced [WRGB] The Future Display Mechanism * Thin-film optical stacks or graded refractive index structure. * Disrupts specular reflection, reducing glare for applications indoors and outdoors. * Sunlight readability. Transcript: Sam B, Blake, Philip, Brendan Displays Devices What is a display? What is a display? 1 2 3 A device that produces light output from the digital or analog information passed to is by a PC to create an image Displays require their own power source Displays receive data from the PC via a multi-wire cable these connections are often simple, keyed, and color coded 4 Display Types Display Types Analog: Large old bulky TV's Technical term--CRT These use continuous signals (think waves) that vary over time to produce images... Very similar to how sound is sent log distance Digital: Most modern displays LCD LED OLED Plasma Projector These use on/off switching to produce images these displays use exact measurements to produce color and light Having Multiple Displays You can set up a PC in a way that provides the user with multiple monitors these monitors are usually linked together to create a very large Image AMD calls this idea "Eyefinity" Nvidia calls it "Nvidia Surround" Multiple Displays Displays Types There are many ways that light is displayed onto screens. Display Types CRT CRT This is a large and bulky display type called the Cathode Ray Tube. It is a vacuum tube with electron guns and phosphorescent screens to display images. LCD LCD An LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a display type for smaller computers. It allows for thinner and sharper displays. They have to have a back-light source and use electrical charges to make the liquid crystals align themselves to pass or block lights. LED Light Emitting Diodes are electronic components that produce light when currents run through in proper directions. They can be combined in large amounts to make massive displays like ones in sport arenas. LED OLED The Organic LED uses organic material to produce light, getting rid of the required back light. OLED More types More types - Plasma uses small cells of charged ionized gas. - Projectors use mirrors or prisms to beam light through lenses to increase size. Modern projectors use Digital Light Processing. Display Connectors 1 2 3 Display Connectors VGA - 3 Rows of 5 pins (DB-15) and usually blue HDMI-3 connectors- Standard, Mini, Micro 4 Display Port-Frowny Face Connector, Like HDMI but one side chamfered, comes in Standard or Mini DP DVI-Digital-Comes in single and dual. Missing 4 pins DVI-Integrated-Full Connector, Digital or Analog, Dual or Single DVI-Analog-Missing Pins Features of a display Properties of a display resolution the number of pixel on a given display first number corresponds to number of columns second number corresponds to number of rows common resolutions: 1920x1080 1600X900 1366x768 resolution Title Native resolution the resoultion that conforms exactly to the number of pixels on the screen A 1920x1080 capable screen has the ability to down scale and appear as a 1600 x 900 display but this would not be it's native resolution Response Time Response Time Response time is a measure of how quickly a pixel can display a change from either black to white or from one shade of gray to another. Lower response time is usually better. Normal response time right now is 1ms for TN panels and 4ms for IPS and VA panels. Refresh Rate Refresh rate the number of times per second the LCD monitor and alter the same pixel represents How many times per second the picture is sent to the monitor common rates are: 60 Hz 120 Hz 240 Hz Brightness Brightness A Display control on the monitor allows you to make the monitor brighter or darker usually represented by a sun icon. In the image to the right, is an example of what a monitor controls icon including how the brightness control looks. Contrast Ratio Contrast Ratio Contrast ratio: the number of shades a monitor can produce between it's brightest white and darkest black Pixel Pitch Pixel Pitch The distance from center of the pixel to the center of another pixel. Pixel pitch typically ranges from .9mm up to 10 if this is too large, it appears as if veiwed through a screen door Filters Filters Privacy: A light altering device that prevents the images from from being seen from most angles, typically used on laptops for public transit etc. Anti-glare: Prevents outside light from hitting the screen and bouncing back (glare)
