It's important to understand that, first and foremost, Star Trek was not created or developed as a critical study of the truth, life's fundamental principles, or concepts of reasoned doctrines. We just wanted a hit series.” - Herbert Solow, executive in charge of production Thesis: Producers and executives concerned primarily with the popularity and finances of ‘Star Trek’ often limited the franchise’s progressiveness while writers such as Gene Roddenberry strove to support liberal attitudes towards the Vietnam War, race, gender and homosexuality. Transcript: (^^^ A precise representation of your inner reaction to this presentation.) Location 1: More semi-boring facts (I'm doing the best I can with entertaining you, folks. Feel free to laugh at my attempts, just this once): 1- More than 26,000 people live within each square mile of New York. 2-More than 47 percent of New York City's residents over the age of 5 speak a language other than English at home. 3- More than 250 feature films are shot on location in New York City each year. 4- Approximately 790,000 companies operate in New York City. 5- An average of 4.9 million people ride the New York City subway each weekday. In Star Trek: Into Darkness, they describe Eurasia as a continent on planet Earth; well, they would be correct, technically, but it has so much more to offer than just any place on the map. Eurasia holds a large portion of the population, and it also offers a culture unlike any other to the world. Located primarily in the eastern and northern hemispheres, Eurasia is considered a supercontinent. Here are a few semi-unrelated facts: 1-Toronto is Canada's largest city at almost 5.6 million residents. 2-Toronto is the fifth largest state in North America. 3-Over 30% of Toronto residents speak a language other than English and French. 4-Toronto Zoo is the largest in Canada. 5-Toronto is considered one of the most cultured cities in the world. Bantam Books, a publishing company for the "James Blish" collection of a particularly popular series of Star Trek books, is located in Toronto. Toronto is widely known throughout Canada because of it's large size, and cultural diversity. And although their hockey team, the Maple Leafs, have not won a Stanley Cup in years, their fans still remain faithful, the tickets always being sold out. Hockey aside, the many people you will meet there are sure to be the heart of the melting pot [of humans]! Well, as you can see, this presentation is going to be about one of the chillest shows throughout all of known space; i.e. Star Trek. And if you didn't catch the pun above, I'm already judging you (And I'm already being judged on this presentation, so don't cry too hard. Chances are I'll be right there with you by the end of it, sobbing grossly at my inevitable failure). Now let's begin. Location 5: In Star Trek, there is a character named Mr. Spock, and he is from a planet called Vulcan. This planet is key in a few of the earlier episodes, as well as many of the later ones. People from Vulcan, Vulcans, often have green blood, pointed ears, slanted eyebrows, and are simply logical beings, meaning that they tend to disregard emotions in order to make the best choice. Spock, though half-human, is very good at suppressing his emotions, however he does show emotion from time to time. WAIT OKAY I KIND OF LIED. FEEL FREE TO GIVE ME ITENSE GLARES OF HATRED IN A WAY TO SYMBOLIZE HOW DEAD OUR FRIENDSHIP IS NOW. Here's some more facts that probably aren't relevant: 1- In 1985 a flock of starlings landed on the minute hand of Big Ben and put the time back by five minutes. 2- Waterloo Bridge was built mainly by women (take that every single sexist prick that roams the Earth). 3- Only six people died in the Great Fire of London. 4- In 1952, pollution was so bad, a theater performance at Sadler's Wells had to be abandoned when smog crept into the auditorium. 5- London was once the most densely populated city on Earth. Then, in 1925, it was beaten by Tokyo. Located in New York, is yet another Bantam Books publishing company. New York is well-known for its diversity, arts, and fashion, as well as its variety. The expansive amount of restaurants ensures that you'll definitely find what you're looking for, whether it be Chinese Take-Out or Louisianans famous Cajun food. Many designers hope to make it big in New York, and the unique fashion and building designs are only one example of why. those birds are hardcore Alright, then. With that out of the way, let's get started! Location 2: Another Bantam publishing company is located in London. Being widely known for the "Big Ben" clock tower, London is more often noted by many Americans for it's peculiar "accent," which, unfortunately, influences anyone within the general vicinity who just so happens to have a mouth to attempt to mimic their pattern of speech until they are convinced that they are "totes a Brit." omg no wai Location 3: (Alright, I may have lied to you. Before we actually begin, I would like to request that I not be interrupted, for this slide show will need time to wallow in all of its righteousness. And by "righteousness," I mean swaggar. ##yolo) Please just stop paying attention now, it's bloody rubbish. Don't even take the time to listen to me any more, it's just getting worse: 1- Eurasia is inhabited by almost 5 billion people, more than 72.5% of the world's population: 60% in Asia and 12.5% in Europe. 2- Eurasia has been the host of many modern civilizations, including those based in Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. 3-
Transcript: Caitlyn Dochenetz Anthropology 11/19/2012 •The Romulan believe that their way of life, and living was above all the rest thus leading to their planet being destroyed. In trying to maintain the Romulan population they flee in a ship and continue to hunt for Spock, and the U.S.S Enterprise. •The Vulcan believe that emotion should be set aside so that logic may lead the way thus believeiing that humans are too emotionally involved to handle simple tasks or to win any battle. •The humans, although trying to work with everyone equally, believe that all out of space races are entirely too hostile, thus; maintaining a growing effort to constantly subdue all outer space problems. (Ex: James Kirk believes that Spock is spineless, and does not know how to run a ship – Spock believes that Kirk is entirely too involved with himself to be able to run properly.) •It’s kind of hard to say that I learned a lot from a Star Trek movie, but what I did find out was that Sci-Fi movies have more to them than a lot of people know. There is more “moral of the story” scenarios than in a lot of movies. Also, Star Trek fans are one of the biggest fan bases of all time. There are websites (even dating sites) dedicated solely to Star Trek. Some sites are even completely in Klingon. •Bajoran •Ferengi •Tamarian •Orion – Separate into high Orion and Low Orion for lower class •Andorii •Borg – Most feared race •Vulcan – choose logic or emotion •Rihannsu – Romulon people (declared from Vulcan) •Klingon – most common •Federation Standard – Spoken on Earth Basic, Battlestar Galactica, etc. Ethnocentrism •There are many different genders that are applied to this particular movie. There is a heavy mix of different species, and being Sci-Fi there are many different variations of both the male and female make up. There are hermaphrodites, androgynous, multiple sexes, and male or female. •There is no specific role for a male or female. In the movie, Nyota Uhura (as played by Zoe Saldana) is a part of the crew on the U.S.S Enterprise. Also, women are featured quite frequently as commanders, lieutenants, and officers. •Males are predominately the commanding officers, and are the ones who call all the shots. Men are also the ones who fight the battles, as well as, hold the highest positions. (ex: James T. Kirk Captain, Spock Captain, etc.) •Vulcan -> Stick to tradition with no mistake. They practice rituals that keep strict to their past in order to maintain a consistant society. They truly believe that emotions are for humans, and that logic is the only way to think clearly. They are also very against interracial couples (ex: Spock was half human and people did not like him for that.) •Romulan -> a lot of their culture is based off of old Vulcan belief and rules. Romulan also believe that the only people that truly deserve respect are their own kind. They do not trust anyone or try to make nice with anyone but within their own culture. •Earth Basic Humans -> Extremely similar to our lives today. People go to school, work, and play but they only difference being the awareness of other life, as well as, galaxy travel. Now-a-days, the biggest honor is to be a doctor or a politician, in this time being a cadet is what all should do. All people in one way or another serve the space travel business. Cultures Works Cited •In the Star Trek series, as well as, movies religion seems to take a back seat and science takes over. Clearly science plays a big roll because it is a science fiction series, but there are few exhibits of religion in the movie. At most god is mentioned but no praised. •As far as the aliens exhibiting religions, once the Vulcans realized their planet was under siege they all gathered under the katric arch, which is simply just a mural in order to preserve their culture, but not to worship. •Weddings and such are performed with different rituals, but not a blessing or reading by a preist.
