By Michael Hankins Traditions Cost of Attendance Campus Life Citations 89% of all undergrad students are living in on campus housing such as dormitories and group houses. There are around 80 of these living quarters spread out on campus, many of which are coed. There are also purely freshman, sophomore, and so on, dorms available. There are also around 650 student groups to participate in, places to eat, etc. History The idea for Stanford University was first drafted by former California Governor, Leland Stanford, who sought a way to immortalize his son after his son, Leland Jr., died of typhoid in 1884. He had already acquired around 8,000 acres of land in Palo Alto California (Tall Tree) which he planned to use as a stock yard, but his plans obviously changed after his son’s death. Before formally starting the university, he had to choose what kind, so he toured the major universities of the time seeking advice. After the tour, he started construction on his large plot of land, finishing on October 1, 1891 after six years of planning and construction, Stanford was done, becoming one of the first Co-Ed universities of it’s time. The primary school colors are cardinal red and white. The unofficial mascot is the Stanford tree. Stanford University Focused on advancing human health and environmental stability, also understanding complex living systems. The goal is to fuse engineering and life sciences that promote biomedical discovery. This program is jointly supported by the department of medicine and engineering. Stanford houses a variety of traditions ranging from down to earth to just plain strange. Some include Uncommon Man/Woman, which is a tradition of honoring students who contribute to Stanford in great ways. Others include Sunday flicks (basically a weekly Sunday movie screening), the fountain hopping (pretty self explanatory), and the primal scream (a loud wail occurring at midnight the weekend before finals), etc. Program of study: Bioengineering
