This presentation demonstrates a spring semester English 102 course “sitebook” -- designed using Canvas, MCC resources, Diigo.com social bookmarking, and various open-source tools -- that honors instructor intellectual freedom while empowering students to build Canvas pages and e-portfolios. By semester’s end, the professor can incorporate student contributions for better Canvas course sites in the future; students will walk away with increased media literacy and e-portfolios that house exemplary work (including Canvas pages); work that may be valued as pages or chapters on other Canvas sitebooks and by various departments. The documentary film would start with an enactment showing a scene from older centuries with a man wearing traditional old dress, representing early Islamic centuries, reading and pondering upon a book in a kitabkhane with a number of people moving around, reading and discussing books. Then indicating the time passing element the camera would dissolve to show a modern age library showing plenty of books in shelves with not a single person around. Such visual comparison would establish our subject. The documentary would involve interviews of four renowned scholars and experts including Zia Muhayyudin, well known actor, writer and poetry and prose narrator; Ghazi Salahuddin, Kasauti’s compare and well known scholar; Zehra Nigah, famous poet and writer and Fehmida Riaz who is a poet, has penned a number of books and is author of a few novels as well. The discussion of these interviewees throughout the film along with the script would take the subject forward step by step. We’ll be showing how reading has been an essential part of life in older centuries and what big scholars and we have produced comparing it with the present time where excessive use of technology has replaced the books and all kind of reading activities. We’ll be focusing on libraries and book stores of big cities to show the decline of reading culture and SOTs of librarians would be included as well. We’ll also be covering famous Publishing Houses such as Sang e Meel, Feroz Sons etc that would help us to quantify the number of books that were published in last 2 decades and how many editions of the various books were published. It would also help us finding average Urdu and English book readers. The documentary would also include the scientific aspect to show how a mind engaged in some sort of reading activity works and what positive effects the reading generates in our mind and body. We’ll be covering house settings and daily life activities of two selected families; one with a personal library at home and the family members with positive reading habits and the other ignorant towards any sort of reading as it would help us show how reading positively changes an individual’s behavior and approach towards life. A number of solutions regarding the issues and problems discussed would be suggested through the discussion of the expert scholars mentioned above accompanied by complementing visuals. Identification of a problem in itself is the first step towards its solution. By creating awareness on the said issue we hope and expect a change in behavior or at least a motivation towards the change. As we make them to realize why reading matters in their lives it is hoped that there would be an inclination towards enhancing knowledge by reading instead of just going after career driven education.
