Transcript: Prematurity & Eating Disorders According to the National Eating Disorder Association, 10 million American women suffer from an eating disorder. Bottle fed vs. breast fed Benefits of breastfeeding preemies: - reduced risk of infection - protects against illnesses (sepsis, meningitis, bronchitis) - early cognitive benefits Studies are still being done to determine the connection between premature birth and the later development of eating disorders. I was fortunate enough to not be developmentally impacted by my premature birth, but the more I research, the more I believe my eating habits have been impacted. bulimia nervosa: an eating disorder where the main feature is binge eating followed by unhealthy behaviors to compensate for such binge eating in order to prevent weight gain (e.g., purging). neurological problems/ developmental delays vision problems Premature Birth Complications Prematurity: A premature infant is born before 37 weeks gestation. (cc) photo by Metro Centric on Flickr picky eating Taste buds develop at 27 weeks. inability to maintain body heat It is often difficult to breast feed premature infants because they might be confined to an incubator. In some cases, the only option is to bottle feed or provide nutrition through an IV. immature digestive system Conclusion One study showed that infants who were born prematurely and/or bottle fed were significantly more likely to develop an eating disorder later in life. anorexia nervosa: a psychiatric disorder characterized by an unrealistic fear of weight gain, self-starvation, and conspicuous distortion of body image. immature lungs Types of Eating Disorders (cc) photo by Metro Centric on Flickr infections overeating/binge eating jaundice "It seems possible that biological factors, related to prematurity, and psychological factors, related to mothers' parenting style, may both play a part in the development of eating disorders". Feeding problems that start at birth have the potential to continue to plague preemies. (cc) photo by jimmyharris on Flickr (cc) photo by Franco Folini on Flickr
