Transcript: 12/3/2019 By: Tresa Batchelder A World Made From Plastic Overview Overview It's all about convenience for us Pollution arising from plastic, in particular is a threat to the world's oceans and the creatures living in them as well as people too We need to remove plastic from our daily routine to ensure we are not a threat to animals and ourselves anymore Guy Graney's: "Slipping Through the Cracks" Pollution By Micro Plastics What are Micro Plastics? Micro plastics refer to the general class of synthetic plastic particles ranging in size between one and five millimeters Why are they a problem? Micro Plastics Are a Problem Because... They are very tiny so most filtration systems are not able to filter them out Marine life absorbs them and ingests them which results in suffocation and starvation They absorb trace chemicals from their environment which leads to food chain poisoning They will eventually make their way back to us in fish and sushi and this is a problem because they absorb toxins, which will end up poisoning us Annie Leonard's: "The Story of Bottled Water" Pollution By Plastic Water Bottles The Problems are... What's the Problem? 80% of water bottles end up in landfills where they will sit for thousands of years or burned in incinerators which release toxic pollutants (the rest gets recycled) Cities are spending millions of dollars dealing with plastic water bottles, but those millions of dollars could have been used to better our water systems since there are 1 billion people around the world without access to clean water. That money could also help prevent pollution. Plastics or Corporations? Plastics or Corporations? Some might say corporations play a bigger role in pollution than plastics. Children and teens exposed to polluted waterways usually carry around a thousand parasitic worms This causes a child to die every twenty seconds from a water related illness Health Problems Corporations don't seem to think twice of the environmental consequences, simply because they don't care It's more convenient for them to dispose of their waste into a local waterway, then to dispose of it the proper way Yes, these corporations do get caught, but they are fined a small fee for their actions which will not put a stop to the problem at all. Corporations have money and they're not going to let a small fine stop them. They will continue their actions because that is what is convenient for them Why?

Nature vs. Nurture Background

Transcript: Nature vs Nurture The main reason I choose nurture over nature was because i felt as if how we grow up and what experience has a greater effect on how we view things than through genetics. Life experiences have a greater effect on how we see things and how we react to what we go through. Throughout many years there has been a constant debate over whether nature or nurture had a bigger effect on which had a larger effect on how people see things and how we view things in the world. On one side on nature, nature has to do with genetics and along with cognitive psychology and psychoanalysis. On the other side we have nurture which has to do with how people grow up and how they experience things as they grow up which includes Humanism and behaviorism.Throughout the years researchers have debated over which one has the biggest effect on what we see in the world and how it effects us. So which one has the larger effect? Nature vs. Nurture Background In the wall Street Journal researchers have found that people react through nurture in that they react to there experiences and how they are taught to grow up and what they teach themselves to like and not to like. In the Telegraph in the UK found that environment had a huge impact such as in cities it is more environment based in how people react to certain situations. In the city people are more likely to react using their environment than their genetics. According to one article how a child reacts is based on whether his/her parents are mad, which in turn effects how that child will react to what happens in a certain manor based on what they have experienced or seen. Research One such study said that even though to twins maybe identical they will still choose different things throughout their life such as the types of friends and their mates. They will have different ambitions and that's all because of the things that influence them that are around them. Researchers have found this in multiple different sets of identical twins and they all seem to make decisions based on past experiences and how their environment effects them. Another study showed that depending on a childs environment, that will determine whether or not an actual trait will come out. Meaning that based of the surrounding environments that a child is in will determine how they act and what traits they expose. Overall they have found that the surrounding environment of child has a larger effect on what they child does and how he/she will think in certain situations as they grow up . Nurture Studies
