Transcript: There are 3 states of matter solid liquid gas ------------------------------------------------------ solid - firm and stable in shape; not liquid or fluid. liquid - a nearly incompressible fluid that conforms to the shape of its container but retains a constant volume independent of pressure. gas - can be from evaporartion and/or preciptation In a chemical change where there is a chemical reaction, a new substance is formed and energy is either given off or absorbed. example: lighting a match this is a chemical change because the match is giving off heat due to the match creating fire Exothermic reaction by: peyton walker The term endothermic process describes a process or reaction in which the system absorbs energy from its surroundings; usually, but not always, in the form of heat. example : Photosynthesis, the reaction which allows plants to use sunlight to produce food and energy. The energy that is taken in is light energy from the sun. mixtures and substances states of matter Matter can be broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be separated into their original components. A chemical substance is composed of one type of atom or molecule. physical changes A physical change in a substance doesn't change what the substance is example : tearing a paper in half this is a pysical change due to not changing the state it is in because you are only changing the apperance of the paper An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy by light or heat. It is the opposite of an endothermic reaction. Expressed in a chemical equation: reactants → products + energy. example: The energy is usually transferred as heat energy, causing the reaction mixture and its surroundings to become hotter.
