Transcript: Informatics has led to universal coding for billing and diagnostic purposes. This system allows for communication between doctors and insurance companies to ensure the patient gets the correct exam performed. In addition to coding terminology, there is nomenclature that is standardized as well, for nurses that nomenclature falls under NANDA. Universal Terminology Instead of a nurse taking an hour or more to chart what she did during her shift with each of her patients, she can now use that time to do other things. She can help other nurses and increase overall productivity and increase patient safety by responding to call lights in patient rooms other than the ones she has been assigned to for her shift. Informatics can use data and statistical records to track which patients are infected with hospital acquired infections, like MRSA, and how they were infected. With that information the healthcare setting can make changes in hygiene practices (increase hand washing with a specific nurse if found to be lacking in that area) or find out which circumstances are likely to cause those infections. Medications can be associated with the patient to prevent errors through a bar code scanning system. This ensures that the right patient is getting the right medication at the right time (and billed appropriately for what they receive). With electronic records the nurse is also able to retrieve the correct medications from electronic medication machines (PYXIS) which provide the drug vials one at a time in a controlled drawer. Reduction of Errors Increased Productivity Knowing data trends can help increase convenience for nursing. Knowing the methodology of how nurses chart in order to document their shifts and patient interactions has lead to computer/electronic charting with prompts to ensure that key information is entered, and no errors result from messy handwriting. Electronic Charting Electronic charting as a result of informatics has also increased convenience by being able to view imaging scans performed previously without having to hunt down the actual physical films - we can now view CT scans remotely on the patient's file. Because we have electronic records and databases, this allows for even more data collection for statistical analysis. This information can follow mortality rates for diseases, which kinds of treatments let to a decrease in hospitalization times, and which drugs had the least amount of side effects. This information collected anonymously could help improve treatments for future patients. Increased Privacy What is informatics? How does Health Informatics relate to nursing? Informatics is method of turning data into useful information. It relates to nursing through nursing informatics, or the use of information to support and shape all aspects of nursing (patient safety, education, research, and administration). Research Opportunities Convenience Health Informatics - Week 1 Morgan Johnson Healthcare Informatics Informatics and electronic charting has led to an increase in face-to-face time spent with the patient and a decrease in the amount of time writing in a chart, which leads to increased patient satisfaction and level of care. Informatics in regards to electronic charting has also created an increase in patient privacy. Whenever a patient's record is retrieved there is a log of who accessed it , when and why. Unless there is a medical necessity to access that data the person who had unauthorized access can be tracked down and dealt with according to the facility's policy.
