Transcript: Waste Management In MA By: YuYing Chen Introduction There will be 3 maps displaying the connection with population density, incinerators, compost site, landfill sites and water sheds. GIS Presentation Hypothesis: - Incinerator would also be far from population dense areas -High population areas have more landfill and compost sites - Landfill sites would be far from water sheds Population density VS Location of combustion facilities Incinerators Hypothesis was incorrect/correct - There were many incinerators around Boston area - High population density -> high energy consumption - But now there's only 6 active incinerators across the state and they are all away from the city area Compost site VS Population density Hypothesis was correct -Area with higher population density have more compost sites. -Surprisingly there are many compost sites but we do not have compost service offered -Only 1 compost handling facility (maybe all these compost site are local farmers) Compost site Landfill Sites VS Surface water supply watershed Hypothesis was incorrect - Most of landfills are "on top"/ next to the watersheds - Many landfills are Unlined -Only a few landfill that are lined Landfills Data source - All data were from MASSGIS (bureau of geographic information) MassDEP solid waste diversion and disposal Data Possible Additions - GIS is hard when you don't use it on daily bases -It's also hard to create a map with enough information and make sure it doesn't look clustered Addition Info Issue encountered - Available data is limited - Forgets how to use the tools and or the steps of exporting data while trying to make the map Work cited MassDEP, M. Transcript: A landslide or landslip includes a wide range of ground movement, such as rockfalls, deep failure of slopes and shallow debris flows. Typically, pre-conditional factors build up sub-surface conditions that make an area/slope prone to failure. Transcript: References Particle pollution refers to a mix of very tiny solid and liquid particles that are in the air we breathe. Such as the dirty, smoky part of that stream of exhaust from vehicles. Particle pollution can increase the risk of heart disease, lung cancer and asthma attacks and can interfere with the growth and work of the lungs. Refinery Overload Based on The American Lung Association “State of the Air 2013” report, shows the air quality nationwide. Los Angeles once again tops the list for the worst ozone pollution in the country for the 13th time in the 14 years the report has been issued. Californians, in general, tend to inhale the dirtiest air: This is one of the most widespread pollutant Ozone or O3 is an invisible gas molecule composed of three oxygen atoms In the presentence of the right ingredients: NOx, VOCs, CO & sunlight ; they react to form SMOG Thank You & Congrats to the Class of 2015 What is Air Pollution? Nearly 9 million children have Asthma in the U.S. In LA county 1,173,000 children have been diagnosed with asthma. 63,000 students in Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) have asthma. The highest increases in asthma are found in urban areas and among African-Americans and Latinos. The asthma hospitalization rates for African-American children in Southland counties are two to four times higher than for other ethnic or racial groups. What we can do to Help with the Pollution Problem "What's in the air" Katy Nadia Nancy Mayiam HEA 497-Professor Morales May 15,2015 How the Bad Air affects You Year Round Exposure could possibly cause serious threats, such as: early death (both short-term and long-term exposure) cardiovascular harm (e.g. heart attacks, strokes, heart disease, congestive heart failure) Likely to cause respiratory harm (e.g. worsened asthma, worsened COPD, inflammation) May cause cancer May cause reproductive and developmental harm Presentation Description Top 10 Most Ozone-Polluted Cities Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside, Calif. Visalia-Porterville, Calif. Bakersfield-Delano, Calif. Fresno-Madera, Calif. Hanford-Corcoran, Calif. Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Yuba City, Calif.-Nev. Houston-Baytown-Huntsville, Texas Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas Washington-Baltimore-Northern Virginia, District of Columbia-Md.-Va.-W.Va. El Centro, Calif. 3 million people die each year of air pollution effects, 700 thousand are within the U.S, and 5,OOO Southern Californians die prematurely Death ratios between air pollution and breast/prostate cancer are equal. Approximately 4 trillion tons of carbon is accumulated in the air each year. 46% percent of Americans reside in counties with unhealthy air of either ozone or particle pollution. Even though the Air Pollution epidemic is a huge task to take on and a difficult problem to fix. We can still do our part to not further contribute to the issue. These are some suggestions: Drive less- Combine trips, walk, bike, carpool or vanpool, and use buses, subways or other alternatives to driving. Use less electricity- Turn out the lights and use energy efficient appliances. Don’t burn wood or trash- Burning firewood and trash are among the largest sources of particles in many parts of the country. Send a message to Congress- Urge them to support cleaner, healthier air and oppose measures to block or delay the cleanup of air pollution. Ask the EPA to set tighter standards- for such issues as gasoline and tailpipe pollution standards for cars, trucks and SUVs Get involved- Participate in your community’s review of its air pollution plans and support state and local efforts to clean up air pollution According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Air pollution is contamination of the indoor or outdoor environment by any chemical, physical or biological agent that modifies the natural characteristics of the atmosphere. Hypothesized Spatial Relationship Asthma More Asthma Info We will be covering the issue of air pollution in the Southern California area. We will discuss the health complications it causes among the younger population, such as asthma. We will depicted these issues through maps using data gathered: Graduated Color Maps Model Builder Buffer Spatial stats ArcGIS story map Important Facts to Consider about Air Pollution Ozone Pollution Chronic Diseases that affect CA Children Children face special risks from air pollution because their lungs are growing and they are very active. 80% of their tiny air sacs, called alveoli, develop after birth. This is where the life-sustaining transfer of oxygen to the blood takes place. Their body’s defenses that helps fight off infections are still developing in their young bodies, this is why children have more respiratory infections than adults. Population Pollutants of major public health concern include particulate matter, carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide. Outdoor and indoor air pollution cause respiratory and other diseases, which can be fatal. There are two types of air pollution
