WHAT IS UPWARD BOUND?

Provides intensive academic support services for income-eligible students
Post-secondary education goals
Serves students from Akron Public High Schools
History:

The history of TRIO is progressive. It began with Upward Bound, which emerged out of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the administration's War on Poverty.



ELIGIBILITY:

Must meet federal income guidelines
Be a "first generation" college student
Reach and maintain 2.5 GPA
College prepartory classes
Must want to go to college!!
Application window is from end of 8th grade year until just prior to completing 10th grade
Complete application, recommendations, and student-parent interview



SERVICES: WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM OFFER?

After school tutoring and homework assistance
College Tours and Campus Visitation Days
Academic and College Preparatory Workshops
Skill Enrichment Workshops
Student Computer Lab and Test Preparation Software
ACT and SAT fee waivers

Summer Component:

Six-week residential enrichment program
Academic instruction based on upcoming fall high school schedule
Cultural and recreational activities
College tours.
Bridge Component:

Current year high school graduates are eligible to participate. Tuition and books are covered for applicable course work at The University of Akron.
