The Shang Dynasty was the first dynasty in China, which we have evidence for from writing and artefacts.
A dynasty is a family of emporers, who ruled over an area of China. Nobles ruled over the cities within the dynasty.
Where was the Shang Dynasty?
The Shang Dynasty was located in China in the region around the Yellow River. It was a good place for a settlement because there was a water supply and suitable conditions to grow crops.
When was the Shang Dynasty?
The Shang Dynasty was from 1600BC to 1100BC. 30 emperors reigned over this time.
Within the Shang Dynasty there were four social classes. They were Emperors and nobles, artisans and craftsmen, the warriors and the peasants (farmers).
Emperors and Nobles
Emperors were the leaders of the Shang Dynasty. They live in the most lavish palaces. They lived inside the city walls.
The Nobles were very rich and had a lot of authority. They were in charge of the cities and they owned the farmers' land. The farmers gave them their food.
The Craftsmen and Artisans were the skilled workers, who lived outside, but close to the city walls.
Their job was to make tools and weapons from bronze and chariots for the warriors. They lived in houses similar to the farmers, but more stable and structurally sound.
The warriors were the people who would protect their dynasty. They would use weapons made of bronze and shields made from wood, with some bronze to deflect other weapons, such as arrows.
Despite the fact their job was to defend the city, they were still made to live outside the city walls.
The peasants were the lowest class in the Shang Dynasty. They were the poorest and were mainly farmers or slaves.
The farmers' tools were made out of stone and wood and they each had their owned plot of land, owned by a noble.
They wore cloth tunics and trousers.
They were only allowed to keep enough food for themselves and their family. They gave the rest to the nobles and if they were caught hoarding their food, they could be killed.
