Chapter 19
Society and Culture in the
First Half of the 19th Century
Indian Pueblos
Rural Towns
About Half a million deaths
Battle left thousands of orphans, widows, crippled etc
People fled the contry, shopes closed families were separated
From 4.5 million people to 7.5 million in 1850
The Gachupines were eliminated at top of the pyramid and criollos replaced them but not much changed
What Else Was Happening At The Time??
Mexico was a rural country
Indians Made 1/3 of Population
lived in small isolated towns
Uniforme cultural pattern
Each had own gov
Huts were made of split reeds covered w/ thatched roofs
Dogs, pigs and chickens lived w/ the family
Only large indian towns had churches
Almost none had schools
The Curandero was the only person that was able to provide medical care
Gardens provided daily needs
Women in charge of house
Males were dominant
Towns ranged from 1000 to 35,000 indians and meztizos
Spanish was the main language
The plazas were filled w/ merchants on market days
The churhes were the most important buildings in town very few schools and in poor conditions. Bad Teachers.
Houses made of adobe and usualy not painted
No Hotels, Restaurants
Leva ( Obligatory reclutment of people)
Almost no contact with other towns for the exception of visitors.
