-headscarf is a symbol in France the disillusion of an indivisible nation "Politics of the Veil" “You’re trying to get customers this way, but you are also pushing customers away. It’s a big leap in the wrong direction when the Dutch should adapt to the Turkish and Moroccans in the Netherlands. This islamicisation has gone way too far and should be stopped. -What are the risks of this comparison? "Otherness" talks about the border of the Mediterranean ("veil") that divides the progress and stagnation of female societies in Europe and Africa/Asia.
when Algerian women wear the veil, they bear the responsiblities for national conflicts, as well as the consequences of an uncertain national identity women = fitna, dangerous force that disrupts a community of believers
the force of women seen as both crucial and disruptive to the nation, continue to be excluded from national life
"protecting the family" = Family Code of 1984, exclusion from education/employment opportunities -speaks from a faith-based point of view about the reasons behind covering your head, how it impacts Muslim women, and how it applies in a global context Discussion Question: In the text "Unveiling Algeria," some of the reasons listed for why women wear the veil are expression of religious faith and escape from harassment.
