Transcript of At what age should we be taught sex ed

I think that students should learn about sex education from their parents and from their schools. If parents help teach their kids about the dangers of sex, the students won't have to rely only on the schools and will feel like they can trust them. If the student doesn't feel like they can ask their mom or dad about any questions, they will find the information from someone else. If both the schools and parents tell sex ed then the student will always have a place to get information and won't be tricked in believing false rumors.
What is Sex Ed?
The Benefits of Sexual Education
Teenagers who had a comprehensive sexual education program have a much lower risk of teenage pregnancy than teenagers who received traditional, abstinence only sexual education. Comprehensive sexual education also reduced risk of pregnancy compared to no sexual education (Kohler 2007).
When Should Sex Ed Be Taught
When children learn about sex ed, they start to make immature jokes and say things about it that aren't true
They may start throwing around words or phrases that have to do with sex
Children may also be scarred for life
Risks of Unprotected Sex
13% of AIDS cases appeared at the age of 25-29, and because of the estimated 10-year period it takes for AIDS to develop from HIV, it is thought that many of these cases appear in adolescence (Parsons 2000). In addition, HIV can be infected through a single act of intercourse (Parsons 2000).
Be safe
We think that sex ed should be taught at school because the teachers may know a little bit more about it and they have gone to school, where they have taught them and can learn it better. We know what to do if we are in that kind of situation. It should be the job of the teachers to teach us .
At what age should sex ed be taught in schools?
Why Parents Should Tell Students About Sex Ed and at School
Sex education should be taught when kids learn about puberty in fourth grade or fifth grade. At the age of ten, kids should be learning about it when they are kind of immature, but will kind of take it seriously. It develops young people to make good decisions on it and know to be safe when it is happening.
Sex Ed is education on sex and how it works
It teaches children how the reproduction cycle works and what happens
It also talks about safety when having sex and how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases
Terrible Effects
of Teenage Pregnancies
The Controversies Over Sex Education
Sex education has historically been a controversial topic, with sides that are for and against it being very divided. For example, when Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders suggested that masturbation should be mentioned in sexual education, she was promptly fired. However, other parties say that kids need to be taught about sex, citing a study of teenagers in which they were given a test about sex, and the average score was 40% (Irvine 2002). Supporters of sex education say that it supports abstinence and that a lack of sexual knowledge contributes to problems like teenage pregnancy. On the other hand, critics of sex education say that too much knowledge on sex contributes to destructive thoughts and teenage pregnancy.

If students learn what sex is and why people have it, they will understand it better and be less confused. There are three main reasons why people have sex:
1. They want to in order to relieve stress or because they think it feels good.
2. They do it in order to make a child.
3. It is not voluntary and they are being forced to do it against their will, which commonly referred to as rape.
Teenage pregnancies result in:
Abortions
The mother having to quit school
Lack of further education for the mother because they will be caring for a child
Higher risk of poverty because of lack of further education
When you are in a relationship you have to do what you are comfortable doing, not what the other person decides. You don't have to do anything you're not comfortable with.
Terrible Effects of
Teenage Pregnancies (Continued)
Isolation and loneliness because of the responsibility of caring for a child
Trauma of possible fostering or adoption of the child
Possible strained relationships with other family members
Cons of Sex Ed
Implementation of Sex Education
Sex education requires good implementation to work, and a study by Katie Buston, Dan Wight, Graham Hart, and Sue Scott that implemented a test sex ed program into a 13 schools showed that teachers had a tendency to modify sex education curricula because of student resistance. (Buston 2002) Teachers also felt that the program being tested, SHARE, was far too long and obstructed their regular teaching plans. As a consequence, important material was left out, indicating that for successful implementation, sexual education programs need to be concise and try to acknowledge the fact that much of the material being taught is uncomfortable for students.
Conclusion
In conclusion, we feel that sex education is a necessary part of schools and should be taught at age 10. The large amount 0f research supporting the benefits of sex education means that it should be included in schools, so long as it is taught well. While sex education programs are controversial, and require good implementation to be effective, their benefits outweigh their disadvantages, so sexual education should become a part of school curricula.
Sex education is important to learn also because we need to know what to do in case we are in a situation like that and be safe for what we are doing and not doing the wrong thing.
Another Reason Why Sex Education is Important for Ten Year Olds to Learn...
LGBTQ
Another reason why sex education is so
important for ten year olds to learn is because of the different sexualities. When a student is taught sex ed, they are generally taught about the different sexualities too. This is important for students to know, especially if they identify as LGBTQ because they should know what it is and what it means.
